Friday Fisticuffs: Riley Cote vs. Shawn Thornton

It may be difficult for some to understand when we say that fighting in the NHL has changed since the lockout. Not necessarily in the numbers of fights occurring. Those have actually seen increased numbers the past few seasons.

What makes fights in this era different is how they are approached. You rarely see two heavyweights going toe to toe, trading punches back and forth.

It’s more typical to see fists flying, but not connecting. Fighters these days  approach bouts more defensively and are more likely protect themselves in a fracas.

This week’s scrum is not one of those defensive minded exchanges. Take it away Shawn & Riley!

Maybe it’s the fact that we see these type of fights so rarely that helps us cherish them that much more. Stick taps, gentlemen!
