Hump Day Hockey Cards: Love Your Hair, Hope You Win

We all have bad hair days. Most of us are lucky that these moments of follicle folly aren’t immortalized for the world to see. The players featured in this week’s HDHC aren’t so lucky.

Yup, that’s Ron Hextall and his thinning hair on a jersey card.

Carey Price had his second shutout in a week has the Montreal Canadiens won their fourth straight game in Toronto tonight. Perhaps the glory of Gomez breaking his goal drought carried on into tonight!

The emotional ceremony preceding the game seemed to suck the life out of the first period for both the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs. There was more icing in those twenty minutes than you typically find on a wedding cake.

Erik Cole opened up the scoring in the second period, with James Reimer completely unable to stop the puck. It was the first of four goals in the period, with Rene Bourque up next for the second goal of the game.

Max Pacioretty scored an easy goal on the power play, something usually unseen by the team with the best penalty kill. The puck slid right in past Reimer, another one he should have been able to stop. It was not a good night for him.

Lars Eller had the goal of the night, dangling the puck and making his way right past Dion Phaneuf to score a beauty.

The Maple Leafs had several chances in the third period, but the posts got the best of their shots. The Canadiens weren’t done yet, however. Mathieu Darche scored the fifth goal of the night, after plenty of complimenting from CBC.

PK Subban of course managed to draw the ire of a few Leafs players. After hitting Phil Kessel in the leg in a possible attempt at a slewfoot, the two engaged in …a hug. I’m sure they were trying for something a little more violent, which teammate Mike Brown later tried to take care of to no avail. Instead of a fight, he got a smile from Subban, and a roughing penalty.

After being last in the Eastern Conference, the Habs are now up to 55 points, in 11th place. The Leafs, in the final playoff spot, are now only 7 points ahead.

Tomas Plekanec and David Desharnais had two assists each tonight. Carey Price also had an assist on Darche’s goal, his 8th point of his career. Tonight’s shutout is his 16th shutout.

Three stars:
1. Carey Price
2. Tomas Plekanec
3. David Desharnais
