On July 20th, the hockey world became fixated with the news of the day – a shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. The reason for the hockey worlds involvement? One of their own was killed in that theater.
Jessica Ghawi (known professionally as Jessica Redfield) was an aspiring young journalist with a love for hockey. Someone many of the girls on this site could relate to. She had recently moved to Colorado to be closer to her boyfriend and had received media credentials for the Colorado Avalanche. Before that she had interned with the San Antonio Rampage.
While the Avalanche have planned events in her honor, the Rampage will be taking it to another level this Saturday night as part of their home opener.
Prior to the game, the Rampage will unveil the home hockey press box as the “Jessica Redfield Press Box” for the 2012-13 season. A silent auction of two Rampage game jerseys with “Redfield” inscribed on the back will be held on the concourse during the game with proceeds benefitting the Jessica Redfield Foundation.
A moment of silence will also be held prior to the game while Jessica’s family is scheduled to be in attendance to drop the ceremonial first puck. My prediction? By the time of that puck drop, there won’t be a dry eye in the house.
It’s moments like this that make me proud to be a hockey fan. I just hope through all of this they remember the fun times Jessica gave us. Because it was videos like this that made everyone believe she would be a household name:
