One day there will be good news to report on the Coyotes Ownership front. It may be good news for another city, but at some point there will be good news. Today is not that day.

Earlier this week, news came out that Greg Jamison might not have the funds to purchase the Coyotes after all and if he did finally find the funds, he wouldn’t have the money to run the team after he purchased it. Not surprisingly, there has been no confirmation on this from either Jamison or the league.

That doesn’t mean we don’t have an idea it may be true. This week, current Coyotes captain Shane Doan continued meeting with other teams as he tries to decide where he is going to sign for next season. How are the two connected, you ask? Doan spoke to Jamison last weekend regarding the status of the sale. No one knows what was discussed between the two but since Doan met with the Canucks this week, I highly doubt Jamison said “don’t worry, the sale will be completed shortly”. (Honestly, if I was Doan, I  wouldn’t have believed him if he had said it but probably safe to assume those words weren’t spoken.)

Does Jamison have the funds? Your guess is as good as mine. But at this point, another potential owner who looked like a “sure thing” looks to once again proving the nay-sayers right. Sigh.

To make matters worse, AZ Central reported yesterday that the group behind the Glendale sales-tax initiative, Save Glendale Now, has filed an appeal to try and get the vote on the ballot in the fall. When Judge Robert Oberbillig had ruled that the initiative would not appear on the November ballot, it was seen as a huge win for the Coyotes as the money from that sales-tax hike would go to paying the arena management fee. If the initiative did end up on the ballot, it would just be another piece to delay the sale to Jamison (if he has the funds) or any perspective owner at the point.

So far Glendale has only released the following statement in regards to the appeal:

“The plaintiff has the right to seek a review of the court’s decision in this matter. It is, however, the duty of the city of Glendale to protect the integrity of citizens’ initiative rights by assuring compliance with the Arizona Constitution and state statutes. As a result, we will address the appeal appropriately.”

The good news is they didn’t say that they the case would automatically go to court. The bad news is they didn’t it wouldn’t be going to court either.

Simply put, it’s just another wrench thrown into a situation that already has had to deal with too many of them. Unfortunately after three years they still haven’t found away around them. The only thing that is certain? Shane Doan will probably be meeting with another team outside of the desert next week.
