2012 NHL Draft Live Blog: Round 1

Welcome to Aerys Sports NHL 2012 Draft Center. This post will be updated throughout the night as teams draft the future of their franchises, as well as any trades that occur.

All times are in CT.

5:40 PM: This trade went down earlier in the day, but I would be remiss if I didn’t report it. The Philadelphia Flyers traded goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to the (heh) Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for three draft picks — picks no. 45 and 117 this year, and a fourth-round pick in 2013.

6:15 PM: After a pause to correct a staging issue, the Edmonton Oilers select Nail Yakupov from the Sarnia Sting first overall.

6:19 PM: According to Eric Stephens, the Anaheim Ducks have traded defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky to the New York Islanders for a 2013 second-round pick. The Ducks have confirmed the trade.

6:24 PM: The Columbus Blue Jackets have selected defenseman Ryan Murray from the Everett Silvertips as the second overall draft pick. May God have mercy on your soul, child.

6:27 PM: The Washington Capitals have announced that they have traded Cody Eakin and the no. 54 pick to the Dallas Stars in exchange for center Mike Ribeiro, according to Katie Carrera.

6:30 PM: The Montreal Canadiens select Alex Galchenyuk from the Sarnia Sting.

6:36 PM: Gary Bettman has just made the Visnovsky trade official.

6:42 PM: The New York Islanders select Griffin Reinhart from the Edmonton Oil Kings.

6:45 PM: The Toronto Maple Leafs select Morgan Rielly from the Moose Jaw Warriors. A bit of a surprise, that pick.

6:58 PM: The Anaheim Ducks select defenseman Hampus Lindholm from Sweden. Most people had him being drafted around 15, but after the Visnovsky trade, they desperately needed a defenseman. His VO2 Max stat is INSANE.

7:02 PM: The Minnesota Wild pick next. Remember when they were first in the league? Hahaha.

7:04 PM: Anyway, the Wild select defenseman Matthew Dumba from the Red Deer Rebels.

7:07 PM: Big trade! The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes for the Hurricanes’ 1st round pick (which is the next pick), center Brandon Sutter, and defenseman Brian Dumoulin! HOLY SH-T.

7:13 PM: The Pittsburgh Penguins select defenseman Derrick Pouliot from the Portland Winterhawks with the pick they just traded for.

7:20 PM: During the break, the Los Angeles Kings announced that they re-signed Jarret Stoll for three years/$9.275 million. (@darenmillard)

7:24 PM: The Winnipeg Jets select defenseman Jacob Trouba from the US National Team Development Program.

7:35 PM: The Tampa Bay Lightning select defenseman Slater Koekkoek from the Peterborough Petes. Wow. That’s a name.

7:39 PM: The Washington Capitals will pick next. They received this pick from the Colorado Avalanche in the trade that sent Semyon Varlamov to the Avs.

7:45 PM: After stalling and then getting booed (GMGM: “Thank you, Pittsburgh. We’re touched.”), the Capitals select Filip Forsberg. Good. Now we can stop talking about how fall he’s fallen in the draft.

7:50 PM: The Buffalo Sabres select center Mikhail Grigorenko.

7:53 PM: The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed Colin Fraser to a two-year deal. (@TEAM1040)

7:54 PM: The Dallas Stars select center Radek Faksa from the Kitchener Rangers.

8:03 PM: The Calgary Flames trade their next pick (14) to the Buffalo Sabres for the 21st pick and the 42nd pick. This means the Flames will have a second-round pick for the first time in seven years. Oh, okay.

8:05 PM: The Buffalo Sabres select center Zemgus Girgensons from the Dubuque Fighting Saints with the pick they just received from the Flames.

8:12 PM: The Ottawa Senators select defenseman Cody Ceci from the Ottawa 67s.

8:18 PM: The Washington Capitals select right wing Tom Wilson from the Plymouth Whalers.

8:25 PM: The San Jose Sharks select center Tomas Hertl from Slavia.

8:28 PM: The Chicago Blackhawks select center Teuvo Teravainen.

8:36 PM: The Tampa Bay Lightning select goaltender Andrei Vasilevski.

8:40 PM: Amid a torrent of boos, the Philadelphia Flyers select Scott Laughton of the Oshawa Generals.

8:48 PM: The Calgary Flames select center Mark Jankowski with the pick they got from the Sabres. Uh. wow. He’s still essentially in high school. That’s… special, Flames.

8:55 PM: With their own pick, the Pittsburgh Penguins select defenseman Olli Maatta from the London Knights.

9:03 PM: The Florida Panthers select defenseman Mike Matheson from the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

9:09 PM: The Boston Bruins select goaltender Malcolm Subban from the Belleville Bulls. His brother is Canadiens’ defenseman PK Subban. I’m laughing.

9:18 PM: The St. Louis Blues select defenseman Jordan Schmaltz from the Green Bay Gamblers.

9:23 PM: The Vancouver Canucks select center Brendan Gaunce from the Belleville Bulls.

9:33 PM: The Phoenix Coyotes select Henrik Samuelsson from the Edmonton Oil Kings. He’s the son of retired NHL player Ulf Samuelsson.

9:38 PM: The New York Rangers select defenseman Brady Skjei from the US National Team Development Program.

9:44 PM: The New Jersey Devils select Stefan Matteau from the US National Team Development Program. His father Stefane Matteau scored the Game 7 winning goal for the New York Rangers against the Devils to send the Rangers to the 1994 Stanley Cup Final.

9:50 PM: The Los Angeles Kings wrap up the first round of the NHL Draft by selecting Tanner Pearson from the Barrie Colts.

Slater Koekkoek’s name sounds like Koenigsegg to me.

    I’m silly.
