The Detroit Red Wings have made it clear of their desire to move out of Joe Louis Arena and to a new facility.

Now it seems as if those plans are finally moving forward.

According to a report by the Sports Business Journal, the Red Wings have selected HKS to team with Chan Krieger NBBJ on a new 18,000-seat arena in downtown Detroit.

But the Wings have not yet confirmed a hiring, only telling the Journal: ”Our organization has been on record saying we’d like to have a new arena in downtown Detroit.”

According to the Detroit News, “The Wings have been on record saying they want a new arena in downtown Detroit, possibly near Mike Ilitch’s Comerica Park and Fox Theatre.”

Comerica Park and Ford Field, the homes of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, respectively, are located a short walking distance from each other in downtown Detroit.

Detroit has called Joe Louis Arena, which seats 20,066, home since 1979.
