Although it isn’t as our Captain on the ice, the Anaheim Ducks announced today that Scott Niedermayer is a new Assistant Coach for the club. Tell me you’re not excited…. I thought so. They’re still figuring out what his exact role will be as a coach, but Niedermayer figures to work with the younger guys such as Cam Fowler who he mentored during his rookie season. Cam Fowler and the other young’ins just hit the lottery on specialized coaching. This is the guy that led the 2007 Ducks to their first Stanley Cup!
Of the news, Scott Niedermayer had this to say:
“I’m very excited to expand my role with the Ducks and take on a new challenge,” …. “I’m grateful to Bob Murray, Bruce Boudreau and the Ducks organization for giving me this opportunity and can’t wait to get started.”
A full transcript of his thoughts and plans can be found: HERE. It’s pretty neat and exciting.
In case you’ve forgotten we’re going to review Niedermayer’s success as an NHL player – Get comfortable, the list of achievements is lengthy.
Most notable, Scott Niedermayer is the ONLY NHL player to have won the Stanley Cup (4x – Anaheim Ducks 07, New Jersey 95, 00, 03), Olympic Gold medal (2x), World Championship, World Cup, Memorial Cup, and World Junior title. He stands as the only player to have won 4 Cups & 2 Golds during his career (Draper, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, Maltby and McCarty also stand at 4x with the Cup, but no player has won it 5x.) He’s been named for the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman 3 seasons in a row (04, 06, and 07.) Named an NHL All-Star six times (98, 01, 04, 07, 08, and 09.) And he was the Captain for Team Canada in Vancouver in 2010 and led them to Gold.
To sum that up, Scotty is one hell of a decorated man. His calm demeanor is notorious along with his leadership. He’s a HUGE bonus to have in the locker room, so it’s time to look forward to what he can bring to this team, again.
