Having committed to Illinois in November of 2012, Colbert was the final freshman to join the outstanding 2013-2014 freshman class, which is ranked No. 18 in the nation.
The 6-9 forward from Virginia attended High School in New Jersey, and chose the Illini over Villanova and Miami.
The 3-star forward was ranked #28 in his position from Scout.com, while ESPN handed him 4 stars and listed him as #80 in the class and #4 in the state of Va.
Along with Kendrick Nunn and Malcolm Hill, Colbert is the 3rd freshman in this freshman class to rank in the top 100.
With Tyler Griffey finally graduating, there is going to be a hole in that forward/power forward spot that Colbert could be filling. However, transfer Jon Ekey may be filling those immediate shoes this year. This is a good thing, because it allows Colbert some time to make the transition into college, and gives him someone to learn from. This way, perhaps he can really take over as a soph., especially since next year Joseph Bertrand will also be gone.
Unless he really shines in practice and in early games, I would wait for Colbert to really show up in the 2014-2015 season. Also, at 5-9 (sometimes listed as 5-8) his height may make things difficult. Though I believe if he has the heart and the talent, height won’t make a big difference.
Look for Colbert in jersey #31! Sadly, the last player I remember wearing that number was Jamar Smith, so let’s hope Colbert leaves a more positive footprint behind with the Orange & Blue!
