Gamecocks earn all of the awards after dramatic win over Mizzou

blockcAfter a thrilling come-from-behind double OT victory on Saturday night, South Carolina football players received numerous accolades in recognition of their fantastic performances.

QB/hero Connor Shaw, also known as #2Sprainz, was named the Athlon Sports National Player of the Week, the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week, and a “Star of the Week” by the Manning Award. He has also been dubbed the greatest quarterback to ever play at USC by many message board posters. Shaw, who entered the game in the third quarter, engineered the win by leading Carolina on six drives, five of which finished with a score. He finished the night 20-of-29 for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

Kelcy Quarles was selected as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week by Athlon Sports, the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, and the National Defensive Lineman of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. He tallied six tackles and three tackles for loss (two of which were sacks). He now has seven sacks on the season, good for second in the conference, and 10 tackles for loss.

Elliott Fry was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week. After missing a field goal last weekend against Tennessee and another early on against the Tigers, he came through in the clutch and his 40-yard field goal won it for the Cocks.

After a rough three quarters, the entire team came together in the fourth and both OTs, and that was great to see. After ruining Arkansas and Missouri’s Homecomings this year, South Carolina will look to have a happy Homecoming of their own this coming weekend against Mississippi State.
