It was a fantastic weekend for soccer, that is if your team wasn’t LFC or any of the other teams that lost… Chelsea took over second place with their win, Liverpool was stunned by Hull City thus falling to fourth place, and Arsenal keeps pushing away from the rest of the pack with 31 total points. There was also news that was announced earlier today that Fulham’s manager Martin Jol was fired and Rene Meulensteen would take over first team duties. This wasn’t a surprise to anyone as Fulham have struggled all season to find their footing and get out of the bottom three. I only have one recap for you guys today, but it’s a long one!
Hull City (3) v Liverpool (1)
Goals- Hull City: Livermore (20’) Meyler (72’) Skrtel (Own Goal 87’); LFC: Steven Gerrard (27’)
Yes, you did read that right. Hull City stunned Liverpool today with a 3-1 victory at KC Stadium. It was the first time in any competitions that Hull has beat LFC. This also comes along with the news that top scorer Daniel Sturridge will be out for six to eight weeks due to ligament injuries he received in training on Friday. Another suprising thing was the fact that Daniel Agger wasn’t in the starting XI and didn’t even make an appearance in the 90+ minutes. It had LFC fans scratching their heads in confusion, and left a bitter taste in their mouths.
Hull City started the scoring early in the 20th minute, but Liverpool didn’t take long to answer back. Steven Gerrard scored one of his signature free kicks to level the game in the 27th minute, but it was the only goal that LFC would score. Hull City took over completely in the second half and they never looked back, scoring the final two goals of the match. LFC’s Skrtel was put in a tough position in the 87th minute while defending close to his own goal. Hull’s player took a shot that deflected off of Skrtel’s head and thus made it an own goal in the dying minutes. Hull City went on to win and LFC was left questioning what went wrong. It was a startling loss for Liverpool and knocks them down to fourth place and seven points behind first place Arsenal.
