After another weekend of being off due to International Duty, many EPL teams were looking forward to their derbies this weekend. Tottenham suffered their worst EPL defeat since 1996, Frank Lampard finally scored in open play after not scoring in ten games, and Stoke City earned their first win in nine games. It’s becoming a tight race (for everyone except Arsenal) as Liverpool and Chelsea are tied for second with Manchester City and Southampton right on their tails. Here’s the weekend’s recaps after week 12!
Everton (3) v Liverpool (3)
Goals- Everton: Mirallas (8’) Lukaku (72’ 82’); Liverpool: Coutinho (5’) Suarez (19’) Sturridge (89’)
Daniel Sturridge showed up big for the Reds this weekend as he saved them from what could have been a vital loss. The Liverpool striker came off the bench in the 79th minute, and ten minutes later he snatched the tying goal in the Merseyside Derby. Like all Derby’s, this one was not without its share of drama. Everton’s savior, Romelu Lukaku got away with a knee high challenge on Suarez early in the second half. It was clearly a red card tackle but alas nothing came of it and he was allowed to stay on the pitch. It was a brilliant game for both sides.
Arsenal (2) v Southampton (0)
Goals- Olivier Giroud (22’ 86’ PK)
Olivier Giroud was living on cloud nine after gifting the Gunners three points to clear them several points at the top of the league. Arsenal started things off early as they had a clear chance in the 11th minute that was scooped up by Southampton’s keeper, less than 6 minutes later they had another great chance that hit the crossbar. Arsenal didn’t let up though and in the 22nd minute Olivier Giroud netted his sixth premiere league goal into an empty net after a terrible mistake by Southampton’s keeper. Southampton had several chances to score, but came up unlucky every time. Arsenal are relishing the win as they move ahead of the pack by four points.
