Duke men’s soccer player Zach Mathers was named the first Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student Athlete of the Week. The sophomore midfielder used late game heroics over the weekend as the Blue Devils went 1-0-1 in the John Rennie Nike Classic. He is one of nine ACC players to record two goals in the opening weekend.
In the tournament finale against Northeastern on Sunday, he scored in the 72nd minute, which broke the scoreless tie. The Blue Devils went on to win 2-0.
Duke leads the ACC in shots per game early in the season.
The men open ACC play as they travel to 14th ranked Maryland for a 7:30pm ET game on Friday.
