Duke women remain number two, men drop in latest polls

After going a perfect 3-0 in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands over the holiday weekend, the Duke women’s basketball team remained number two in the country in the latest AP Poll. They are 8-0 on the season. UConn remains the unanimous number one team.

There are now five ACC teams currently ranked (including the Blue Devils). Notre Dame is number four, Maryland is number eight, and North Carolina dropped to 18th. Syracuse, who is also 8-0, FINALLY cracked the top 25 at number 22 after beating formally number 12 Texas A&M over the weekend. Florida State just missed the top 25.

Duke now will play one of their toughest stretches of the season beginning on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. They will play number 16 Purdue as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Blue Devils then head to Oklahoma to play the 17th ranked Sooners on Sunday afternoon. The top ranked Huskies head to Cameron on December 17th for hopefully the 1-2 matchup everyone has been waiting for. They will need injured senior forward Haley Peters for all three of these games and hopefully she is okay to play (she missed their last three games).

The Duke men’s basketball team dropped in both polls after losing the NIT Season Tip-Off finals to Arizona, who is the new number two team in the country. Michigan State remained the top team for the third week in a row.

The Blue Devils dropped to tenth in the AP Poll and eighth in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Once again, there is some disagreement between the two polls outside of the top two:

The ACC has two teams (including Duke) in the top 25 of the AP Poll and three in the Coaches Poll. Syracuse is ranked fourth in the AP and fifth in the Coaches. North Carolina is still ranked in the Coaches Poll at number 25. Virginia just missed the top 25, while Florida State and Pitt are also receiving votes.

The Blue Devils look to get back in the win column on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge when they host number 22 Michigan. It will air at 9:15pm ET on ESPN.
