The Duke women’s basketball team officially kicked off their 2013-2014 season on Sunday afternoon with their annual Blue/White scrimmage at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Sophomore guard Alexis Jones, who is starting the season without much fanfare, led all scorers with 29 points over the four quarters.
They played ten minute quarters against each other before going up against the scout team in the final quarter. That scout team beat the Blue Devils, 21-20, as the ladies shot abysmally from the free throw line (4-of-13). They led by five points with 2:44 to go (which was also the last time they scored).
The White beat the Blue, 16-7 in the first quarter, though both sides shot poorly from the free throw line (4-of-14 total). The White consisted of Duke’s expected starting five of Jones, Elizabeth Williams, Chelsea Gray, Tricia Liston, and Haley Peters. All but Gray played all ten minutes, with Liston being the leading scorer with six points (3-of-5 shooting). The White scored ten points in the paint and had six fast break points.
For the Blue, Kendall McCravey-Cooper and Oderah Chidom made their Cameron debuts, each scoring two points. However, the Blue squad committed seven turnovers, five coming from Richa Jackson.
In the second quarter, the two sides played to an 18-18 tie, with the Blue tying it up with 18 seconds left. Peters led the Blue with seven points on 2-of-2 shooting (3-of-4 from the free throw line) while also hauling in three rebounds. Liston chipped in five points and Ka’lia Johnson added six points and four rebounds. For the White, Jackson led all scorers with nine points and Jones chipped in seven with three steals. Williams only scored two points, but hauled in four rebounds.
In the third quarter, the White beat the Blue, 28-21. Jones led all scorers with 11 points in the win by going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field with three more steals. Jackson chipped in six points and three rebounds. For the Blue, Liston scored seven points.
Until the final quarter, only Amber Henson came off the bench to play at Cameron for the first time since early in her freshman season. She scored four points in the third quarter.
Liston and Peters scored 20 points each. Gray played in her first game at Cameron since her season-ending knee injury last season in their 25th game. She scored eight points and dished out five assists. Chidom hauled in a team-high 14 total rebounds.
On Wednesday, the Blue Devils will host Glenville State College in their first exhibition game.
