After a daunting loss to new ACC rival and number two Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon, the Duke women’s basketball team dropped in the rankings to number five. That was despite it being just their second loss of the season (they lost to #1 UConn back in December).
UConn remains the unanimous top team, followed by the Irish. Stanford, who beat #21 California on Sunday, and Louisville moved ahead of the Blue Devils. UConn and Louisville will meet this coming Sunday.
The ACC now only has five teams ranked in the top 25. Maryland, despite blowing out Syracuse on Sunday, dropped to number ten. North Carolina was beaten at home by unranked Miami on Sunday and dropped out of the top ten to number 13. NC State moved up to number 14 after a win against the Terps.
Florida State was blown out by unranked Wake Forest on Sunday and dropped out of the top 25.
The Blue Devils are now in their toughest stretch of the season. They will travel to play Clemson on Thursday night before finishing up the season facing 5-of-6 ranked teams.
It starts with UNC on Big Monday (February 10th) and continues with another Big Monday against Maryland on February 17th. NC State travels to Cameron Indoor Stadium on February 20th before the Blue Devils travel to South Bend to play the Irish on Sunday, February 23rd. They return home to Cameron for Senior Day against Wake Forest on February 27th, only to play at rival UNC to finish out the regular season on March 2nd. Thankfully, four of the six games will be played at Cameron.
The Duke men’s basketball team, who played the new unanimous number one team in the country Syracuse into overtime on Saturday night in front of a record crowd at the Carrier Dome, moved up to number 11 in the AP Poll. The Blue Devils were coming off a huge win at Pitt on Monday night.
Duke will now face Wake Forest tomorrow night and travel to play Boston College on Saturday.
The ACC now boasts the number one team in the country, as the Orange take that honor. They are also the only unanimous pick since Duke was number one for six weeks back in 2010-2011. Syracuse will face Notre Dame tonight.
Arizona, who lost their first game of the season on Saturday night, dropped to number two. The only other unbeaten team in the country is Wichita State, who remained at number four (behind two loss Florida)
Virginia is now back in the top 25 at number 20 after a buzzer-beater at Pitt on Sunday. The Cavaliers also won at Notre Dame last week and will face Boston College on Wednesday. Pitt is still in the top 25 in the final spot in the rankings. The Panthers travel to Miami on Wednesday.
