The Duke women’s basketball team had the program’s third largest margin of victory in their home opener Thursday night against USC Upstate. The game was long over at the half, but they still played the second half. The Blue Devils won 123-40. It was their 123rd straight win at Cameron Indoor Stadium against a nonranked opponent.
Duke led 60-18 at the half, which gave the ladies a chance to work on things in the second half and allowed Coach P to play every player (even Jenna Frush saw some action).
With ten minutes to go in the game, Duke had missed just three shots in the second half. Meanwhile, USC Upstate only made 12 total shots (20.7% shooting).
The Blue Devils had a major rebounding edge, 63 (24 offensive) to 24 (eight offensive) for USC Upstate. Duke had 22 steals and forced 30 turnovers to score 41 points. They scored 64 points in the paint, to just four by Upstate.
Senior Haley Peters had a career night in her final home opener. She hauled in 20 rebounds, 11 in the second half. USC Upstate as a team only had 24 total rebounds. Peters also scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Tricia Liston led all scorers with 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She hauled in nine rebounds and dished out a career-high six assists. Chelsea Gray finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She dished out eight assists, had six steals, and hauled in five rebounds. Fellow guard Alexis Jones also scored 14 points (4-of-8 shooting) and had six steals.
Elizabeth Williams rounded out the double-digit scoring by the Duke starters with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. She hauled in five rebounds and blocked three shots.
The scoring did not stop there. The Duke bench scored 41 points. Chloe Wells made 4-of-7 shots (10 points). She also had four assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Freshman Oderah Chidom scored 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She hauled in five rebounds.
Despite the HUGE victory, there were a few negatives. The ladies still struggled from the free throw line: 21-of-30. They also committed 17 turnovers, seven of them came from Gray and Jones.
For USC Upstate, Maddie Herr scored ten points on 2-of-4 shooting.
Duke continues their home streak on Sunday at 2pm ET against Alabama.
