After their Saturday upset victory over 16th ranked Virginia Tech, the Duke football team was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week. The selection was made by members of the of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
The Blue Devils are 3-0 on the road this season and have now won four games in a row. They improved to 6-2 on the season with Saturday’s win to become bowl eligible for the second straight season after not being to a bowl game since 1994. Saturday’s win over the Hokies was their first road win over a ranked opponent since 1971 and first win over a ranked opponent in general since 1994.
They received this honor last season after a 33-30 victory over rival North Carolina.
And the awards keep coming in…
Kicker Ross Martin was named the CFPA Placekicker of the Week. He hit field goals of 51 and 53 yards, with the 53 yarder being his career-high. It also came as the final play in the first half. Those two field goals made him the first FBS kicker this season to make two 50+yard field goals in a game.
Martin has made five straight field goals and is 6-of-8 on the season. He is a perfect 33-for-33 in extra points.
Linebacker Kelby Brown was named the Walter Camp Foundation Player of the Week, given out to the top defensive player. He helped hold VT to a season-low ten total points. The Duke defense also held the Hokies scoreless in the first half.
Brown had 14 tackles in Saturday’s game and a key fourth quarter interception that preserved Duke’s win (with 4:22 to go and Duke clinging to a 13-10 lead). He averages 8.7 tackles a game, which is fourth-best in the ACC.
The Duke defense has held its last three opponents to just 13 points a game.
The duo was also named ACC Players of the Week.
The Blue Devils have a bye week before playing NC State at 4pm ET ON ESPNU on November 9th.
