Duke men’s soccer plays to a tie

On Friday night, the Duke men’s soccer team played rival North Carolina to a 0-0 tie. Both teams were vying for their first ACC win of the season. The Tarheels are ranked 12th in the country. It was Duke’s third shutout of the season and it was the third time that UNC has been shutout this season. The Blue Devils are now 4-4-3 on the season, while UNC is 3-1-5.

soccer ballIn the first half, UNC led in shots, 9-3. The Blue Devils had one shot hit the cross bar and one point blank shot blocked in the second half. Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the overtime periods. The Tarheels finished with a 20-6 shot advantage.

Redshirt senior goalie Alex Long had seven saves in the shutout. That is the second most in his career.


The tie was coming off a midweek non-conference loss to UNC Wilmington, 2-1 last Tuesday.

Brody Huitema scored the team’s lone goal to tie the game at 1-1. However, just 90 seconds later, the Seahawks retook the lead.

The Seahawks led 10-9 on shots, but Duke led on corner kicks (8-6).

Long had four saves in the loss.


Duke is back home for another ACC battle against Virginia on Tuesday night at 7pm ET.
