The seventh ranked Duke field hockey team beat 14th ranked Wake Forest on Sunday, 3-1. The Blue Devils are 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, as they have won five in a row.
It was a well-played defensive game, but Duke broke through in the 28th minute as Emmie Le Marchand passed to Aileen Johnson for the 1-0 score. The shot went over the head of the Demon Deacons goalie.
Over the first 35 minutes of play, the Duke defense held Wake Forest to zero shots.
Le Marchand gave the Blue Devils the 2-0 lead less than ten minutes into the second half on her team-leading seventh goal of the season (and 45th of her career). The shot went off a Wake defender and into the goal.
With less than six minutes to go, Wake Forest cut the deficit to 2-1. A couple plays later, Duke got that goal back on a penalty corner.
Duke out-shot Wake, 15-7 and won the penalty corner battle (5-3). Goalie Lauren Blazing saved three of the four shots on goal.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday, when they host new to the ACC Syracuse.
