The Duke baseball team routed non-conference opponent Norfolk State tonight by an 11-1 score. The 11 runs are a season-high. Duke collected 12 hits, ten by different players, and six of them went for extra bases. Norfolk State also committed four errors.
The Spartans did not collect a hit off Duke starter Drew Van Orden until the fifth when they put together three straight singles to score their lone run. Van Orden picked up his first win of the season by allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
The Blue Devils then erupted for nine runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Freshman catcher Cristian Perez drove in the game’s final run on his first collegiate hit (a single), which was also his first RBI.
Grant McCabe and Kenny Koplove each collected two hits. McCabe drove in two runs and scored one, while Koplove scored two runs. Reed Anthes and Matt Berezo each collected hits off the bench.
Behind Van Orden, the Duke bullpen was stellar. Norfolk State only had two batters reach base after he left the game and those came on walks by Sarkis Ohanian in the eighth. Karl Blum pitched a perfect seventh, while JR Holloway and Bailey Clark combined for a perfect ninth.
The Blue Devils now head to Myrtle Beach for the Caravelle Resort Tournament. They will play West Virginia on Friday, Marshall on Saturday, and host Coastal Carolina on Sunday.
