Vote Alcides!

When you talk about potential All-Stars, KC Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar‘s name doesn’t usually come up. Everybody wants to Vote Moose (Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas) to the American League team, but what about Escobar? Outside of having less homeruns and RBIs, he is more deserving.

Escobar has similar offensive numbers to the NY Yankees’ Derek Jeter. Escobar doesn’t have the power (just two homeruns), but he does leads AL shortstops with 19 doubles (along with leading the Royals). He also has speed: 12 stolen bases to being caught just twice.

Escobar is the only Royals hitter with a batting average over .300. His .315 average leads all AL shortstops and sits in the top ten in the AL in hitting.

He has made eight errors in 70 games (317 chances), which is definitely a negative. His other downside is the lack of plate discipline (just nine walks to 43 strikeouts).

Escobar plays on a team that doesn’t have a potent offense and normally bats ninth in the Royals order. That limits the amount of RBI and run scoring chances.

I would like to see the Royals have more than one player representative at Kauffman Stadium for the All-Star Game on July 10th. Right now, I think Escobar is quietly stating a case for himself, but he needs your help. At the last official count, he was 5th in the league in voting with just 880,111 votes, way behind Jeter’s 4-plus million and Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus with 2-plus million (and the AL manager is Rangers manager Ron Washington).

Voting ends TODAY at 11:59pm ET. You can vote up to 25 times online.

Four Run Seventh Dooms Chen, Royals

So much for getting a winning streak going at Kauffman Stadium. A four-run 7th inning chased KC Royals starter Bruce Chen, as the NY Yankees won 6-2. The Royals dropped to 1-11 at home.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning and it quickly looked like it could be a high-scoring game. Instead the two starters settled down.

After Alcides Escobar‘s two-out double in the 2nd inning, CC Sabathia retired 12 in a row before Eric Hosmer hit a two-out triple in the 6th inning. He escaped that jam and the first and third base jam with one out in the 7th inning by getting Escobar to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Chen couldn’t escape his 7th inning jam. Robinson Cano singled to lead off the inning. Chen rebounded by getting the next two batters out on three pitches. Eduardo Nunez tripled in Cano on the very first pitch to give the Yankees the lead. Chris Stewart (CC’s personal catcher) singled him in. Derek Jeter followed with a two-run homerun to chase Chen.

So much for missing Mariano Rivera right? Well, it wasn’t exactly a save situation, but David Robertson came on to finish the Royals. He BLEW THEM AWAY. Robertson faced Hosmer, Jeff Francoeur, and Mike Moustakas and struck out all three on 15 pitches.
