The Dominican Winter League is into their championship series between Aguilas and Escogido. However before I look at that matchup, let’s take a quick look at how the round robin playoffs finished and how the KC Royals players in the DWL finished off the winter league season.
On January 15th, Manauris Baez pitched 1.1 innings in Aguilas’ 3-2 win over Escogido. He walked just one while striking out two.
The next day, Antonio Cruz pitched 2/3 of an inning in Licey’s 3-1 loss to Aguilas. He struck out one while not allowing a base runner.
Francisley Bueno got the start for Licey on January 17th against Escogido. He allowed three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out two in Licey’s 6-5 win. Bueno allowed a two-run homerun to Mauro Gomez in the 6th inning, which ended his night.
On the final day of the round robin format of the playoffs, Aguilas beat Gigantes 7-1 to force a one-game playoff with Licey. Kevin Pucetas started for Gigantes and allowed five runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out one in the loss.
On January 19th, Aguilas faced off against Licey, with the winner heading to the championship series. Aguilas won 5-4. Baez pitched one inning of relief for Aguilas. He walked one while striking out two. Cruz pitched in relief for Licey and struck out the only batter he faced.
So here is how the round robin format ended: Esocgido (11-7), Aguilas (10-9), Licey (9-10), and Gigantes (7-11).
So Aguilas survived to face Escogido in the best-of-nine championship series. As of now, Escogido leads the series 3-1.
In Game 1, Escogido won 5-2. Brandon Moss hit his sixth postseason homerun in the loss. The next day, Escogido also won, this time by a score of 4-1. Baez took the loss, as he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. He allowed a solo homerun in the 2nd inning.
In Game 3, Escogido won 3-1, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. The next day, Aguilas finally got in the win column with a 1-0 victory. Lorenzo Barcelo pitched a four-hit shutout over eight innings. Francisco Liriano took the loss after allowing an unearned run in the first inning. He allowed just two hits over four innings.
