After receiving five shutout innings from reliever Nate Adcock in the start, the KC Royals offense could do nothing against St. Louis Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook. The Royals collected just three hits off Westbrook through eight innings.
The Cardinals went to work against the Royals bullpen in the 8th inning. After getting one out, Tim Collins allowed a single to Albert Pujols. That was the end of the day for Collins as Royals manager Ned Yost went to right-hander Blake Wood. Wood immediately gave up a two-run homer to Matt Holliday, breaking the scoreless tie.
The Cardinals would tack on another run in the 9th.
Eric Hosmer singled with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, but Jeff Francoeur grounded out against the new Cardinals closer Fernando Salas to end the game.
