I have been looking at several mock drafts for the Atlanta Falcons and I am just APPALLED at what people think the Falcons should/are going to do. Firstly, Justin Houston keeps coming up as a round 1 or 2 pick. Um, WHY?! The falcons really need an explosive DE and Houston just is not that player (at least as of yet). He played at UGA, I get it, I like keeping the Georgia players in Georgia too, but seriously? Did everyone miss UGA’s past season(s)? I mean I am still a fan, but UGA isn’t doing well offensively or defensively and we think that Justin Houston can be the solution to the Falcon’s defensive problem? In addition, Houston tested positive for drugs recently, so I think his draft stock has definitely began to wane. I say get real on him.
My first or second round picks would go to Akeem Ayers (LB), Von Miller (DE) or Derek Sherrod (OT). Notice that I am focusing on defense and offensive line, because the for the next two rounds, the Falcons are projected to get a RB or a WR. Um, again, WHY?! The Falcons have an explosive offense already that is hindered by their offensive line. The defense is what again and again has lost games, so why again are we focusing on these offensive positions that the Falcons already have good coverage on?
I think really staying focused on the support to the offense rather than the offense itself will really pay off next season (whenever that is…) for the Falcons. Getting the big offensive names will NOT help this team go to the next level or onto a Superbowl appearance or victory. Historically, defenses have been the make or break it for a team, especially in post-season and I think the Falcons could be undervaluing their defense. Hopefully, the mock drafts are just red herrings to what the Falcons actually want!
