Is it time to sack the Pro Bowl? No, just move it – Is the Pro Bowl worth saving? The NFL’s all-star game lacks three things that make Americans shamelessly addicted to football: big hits, ruthless competition and violence. While talking about the serious issue of concussions, Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen told me, “Nobody wants to watch a game of two-hand touch.” Read more from The Denver Post >>>>

Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Friday Edition)

Speedy Ronnie Hillman slow to get first chance to play with Broncos - For such a fast guy, Ronnie Hillman has had to learn to take it slow.  The third-round pick running back, who celebrated his 21st birthday last week, missed more than two weeks of training camp with a strained hamstring. Although he’s mostly recovered, Hillman has been inactive for the Broncos’ first two games. He is listed fourth on the depth chart, behind veterans Willis McGahee, Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Mark Kiszla: For now, Denver Broncos come in vanilla flavor - Will the real Broncos please stand up? Before Denver can begin a quest for a championship, these players must find themselves. This is an NFL team without an identity.  How much does quarterback Peyton Manning trust his arm? Whatever happened to the pass-rush specialist formerly known as Elvis Dumervil? Ball control? No huddle? What kind of offense does coach John Fox desire, other than one that might score in the first quarter?  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Arm strength of Broncos’ Manning targeted for criticism after first loss - Let’s talk arm strength.  The topic comes up from time to time regarding Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. One Day at a Time - When Rod Smith began his days as a Bronco, he was just hoping to still have his job the next day. He held onto that job for 14 seasons, finally retiring as the franchise’s all-time leading receiver in 2007.  During halftime of Sunday’s game vs. Houston, Smith will be recognized as the 23rd member of the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame.  It’s an honor that Smith never envisioned for himself during his playing days.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Smith Continues to Make Impression- Although he hung up his cleats in 2007, Rod Smith has continued to impact the only franchise that he played for during his 14-year, record-setting NFL career.  Since his retirement, Smith has still found a way to help the organization, especially the young wide receivers on the teams.  “They say experience is the best teacher,” he said. “I have a lot of experience in this locker room. This is the only one I ever was in, in the NFL. When those guys come in this locker room, they respect the fact that I have experience here, not somewhere else.”  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

The Sacks Will Come - No sacks, no problem. Defensive end Elvis Dumervil, the Broncos’ all-time single-season sack leader, has been held without a sack in the first two contests.  The two-time Pro Bowler isn’t concerned, and neither are his coaches.  Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio said that we was “very happy with Elvis” on Thursday and called his play in the 2012 season “outstanding.”  Head Coach John Fox believes sacks aren’t the only thing that should be used in evaluating the play of a defensive lineman.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Denver Broncos Need More Depth at Running Back Behind Willis McGahee: Fan’s Take - While the entirety of the NFL is fixated on Peyton Manning as the focal point of the Denver Broncos offense, the running game has been performing well. Both of Denver’s first two opponents, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons, have very good defenses. Despite that, running back Willis McGahee amassed a total of 177 yards rushing and two touchdowns against them. While he’s seemingly well on his way to another 1,000-yard season, the Broncos badly need for someone to step up behind McGahee and produce.  Read more from Yahoo! Sports >>>>

Denver Broncos vs Houston Texans: A Reunion Feel - When the Denver Broncos host the Houston Texans on Sunday, the game is going to have a reunion feel to it.  The Texans head coach is, Gary Kubiak who played and coached for the Broncos in the 1980’s and 90’s.  Kubiak was a rookie the same season as John Elway, and served as his backup for nine seasons.  He didn’t play a lot but when he did, he almost always played well.  Read more from Rant Sports >>>>

Jake Plummer, who now lives in Boulder, visits with Denver Broncos - In a preseason when Broncos alumni have taken full advantage of the welcome mat spread out for them at the team’s Dove Valley complex, former quarterback Jake Plummer joined the parade Friday.  Plummer, who is believed to have been to the team’s facility just one other time since the end of the 2006 season when coach Mike Shanahan benched him in favor of Jay Cutler, has relocated to Boulder full time and is set to have hip surgery in the coming days.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

The Lights are On – This offseason, the Broncos welcomed future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and a number of other experienced players that have made Denver one of the league’s most talked about teams.  For every team in the NFL, this weekend’s season-opener brings about the inevitable excitement of a fresh start and a chance to justify the optimism of the offseason. Manning easily takes over as Broncos’ leader, but can he be All-Pro again? - Champ Bailey remembers when he first saw Peyton Manning in a Denver Broncos practice uniform. It didn’t seem weird. No, that wasn’t it. It was something else.  ”Relief,” Bailey remembered, when we spoke during a training camp conversation. “One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time was on my side now.”  After Manning joined the team, players say privately, the atmosphere changed almost instantly. The general feeling seems to be that immediately after Manning began walking the hallways of the complex and situated in the Denver locker room everyone around him began stepping up their game.  Read more from CBS Sports >>>>

Peyton Manning: What Should Fans Expect From the Denver Broncos Quarterback - It seems like yesterday that NFL fans were watching and waiting to see where Peyton Manning was going to sign. Bersch: Prediction – Broncos finish season 10-6 - Someone asked me the other day how I thought the season would go for the Denver Broncos. Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Thursday Edition)

Those who look to fool Broncos’ Peyton Manning rarely succeed - You may have to excuse the guys with first-hand knowledge, those temple-rubbing defensive coordinators who have tried to solve the riddle that is Peyton Manning. They understand Manning has had four neck surgeries. They get that he’s 36 and that he’s fighting the checkered history of future Hall of Fame quarterbacks who tried to recapture glory late in their careers with a new team.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Pat Bowlen’s Broncos game plan is not to wait for Super Bowl titles - Pat Bowlen is 68, and though the Broncos’ owner remains fit, trim and actively involved with the team, he no longer is out front.  He didn’t invest a potential $96 million to get Peyton Manning with the idea of going another 14 years without a Super Bowl.  ”I was tired of not playing in the Super Bowl,” Bowlen said March 20, the day he signed Manning.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos CB Tony Carter on opening-day roster for first time in career - There is a lesson in Tony Carter’s story for the hundreds of NFL hopefuls whose professional football dreams were seemingly shattered last week when teams pared their rosters to 53 players.  Four times in his first three years in the NFL, Carter received a heartbreaking call telling him he was being cut.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Still Hard at Work - This is what Peyton Manning has been working for.  Sunday night, the four-time NFL MVP will run through the tunnel at Sports Authority Field at Mile High for his first meaningful football game since Jan 8, 2011.  After working his way back from neck surgeries that caused him to miss the entire 2011 season, his first snap against the Pittsburgh Steelers will mark a significant milestone for the 15th-year quarterback.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Readying for Revenge Factor - All of Broncos Country remembers the last time the Steelers visited Sports Authority Field at Mile High.  In fact, that was the last meaningful game that Pittsburgh played, as its season ended when Demaryius Thomas crossed the goal line in Denver’s 29-23 overtime victory in the AFC Wild Card Round.  So, with that as Pittsburgh’s last memory of the 2011 season, the Broncos expect the Steelers to have thoughts of revenge on their minds.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Denver Broncos: 8 Bold Predictions for 2012 - Predicting the NFL season is an exercise in futility. Students in Colorado school district not allowed to wear Peyton Manning jerseys - Denver Broncos fans are thrilled over Peyton Manning’s arrival in the Mile High City. They showed their excitement by running out and buying Manning’s jersey in droves. In fact, Manning’s Denver jersey has been the top-selling jersey on NFL.com since April, when the NFL switched to Nike-made jerseys.  However, the Peyton-Mania has not caused a Colorado school district to change its dress code. Because of gang affiliations with certain numbers, students are not allowed to wear jerseys with the No. 18, which happens to be the number Manning wears.  Read more from Yahoo! Sports >>>>

Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Monday Edition)

New focus, same foundation in Denver Broncos’ offensive line - There is greater strength in pass protection without lifting a weight.  The added power up front was ensured with the Broncos’ switch in quarterbacks from Tim Tebow to Peyton Manning. Tebow took 33 sacks while making 271 pass attempts last year. Manning in 2009 was sacked 10 times despite 571 pass attempts.  ”The decision-making is so fast,” said right guard Chris Kuper. “You block as long as you feel pressure. When the ball is gone, they start to turn around. When the ball is gone in two seconds, they’re turning around.”  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Denver Broncos rookie defensive lineman Derek Wolfe a big hit so far – Finally, as Derek Wolfe planted his hand in the Soldier Field dirt Thursday night, he was staring down a live target. After weeks of being told “Don’t touch the quarterback,” Wolfe couldn’t wait to start a pass rush and finish it. Sure, Thursday was just a preseason game, and nothing that happened in Chicago will stick on Wolfe’s NFL record. But with two sacks and another tackle for a loss, Wolfe made a good first impression.  ”Obviously I want to be starting, so I’m going to do what I have to do to start. I’ll keep my head down, keep grinding, keep pushing,” Wolfe said. “You get what you deserve in this league. And if you deserve to start, they’ll put you in there.”  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

‘No Excuses’ For Second-Year Safety - Safety Rahim Moore isn’t slow to admit that at times, he struggled last year.  “I’ve had some good and bad (experiences), majority bad,” Moore laughed.  He’s over it. The only reason Moore looks back on his 2011 season is to learn from it.  “You just get better,” Moore said. “You watch (the film), but at the same time you have to move on. It’s not like you harp or get mad about it. You just get better. Because at the same time, there were some advantages that I didn’t have last year compared to previous rookies. Now, it’s no excuses. I’m just trying to make plays and win games. That’s it.”  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Depth Chart a Work in Progress - The first preseason game is in the books and there is even more excitement among Denver Broncos fans now, if that is even possible.  The 31-3 win over the Chicago Bears Thursday night was seen by fans and media throughout the state of Colorado and, due to the cut-ins by the NFL Network, many smaller game segments have been viewed nationally.  One of the favored topics of discussion is the depth chart. The first one was published last week, and quite naturally it stimulates great conversation.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Moreno, Garland, and Stokley Can Be Important Role Players for This 2012 Denver Broncos Team: Fan’s Take - There are three games left in the Denver Broncos preseason schedule and precious little time for certain member of the roster to make a big enough impression on the coaching staff to be kept around for the regular season. The roster needs to be trimmed to 80 player by August 28, but then another (more severe) cut happens on September 2 when the roster is pared down to its final 53 players. Of all the non-starters who are out there competing for playing time and a spot on the team, these three guys need to make that final cut when the Broncos play the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 9.  Read more from Yahoo! Denver Broncos: Which Rookie Will Have the Biggest Impact in 2012? - After a 1-4 start, Tim Tebow led the Denver Broncos to an 8-8 record and an AFC West title and a first round victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.  But now, Tebow is no longer with the team; the Broncos replaced him with four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning.  In the 2011 NFL draft, the Broncos struck gold with their first round pick Von Miller, who won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. They also gained a starting tackle in Orlando Franklin, who started all 18 games for the Broncos, including their two playoff games. Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter split time at the safety position and appear to be solid back line players.  Read more from Bleacher Report >>>>

What to Watch for in the First Quarter of the Denver Broncos Regular Season - One year ago, when someone said “Denver Broncos“, what was the first thing you thought of?  Current New York Jets backup quarterback, Tim Tebow.  Of course, this time last year, Tebow was on the fast track to becoming a practice squad quarterback, quarterback Kyle Orton‘s job looked safe, and it looked as if a losing season would be a certainty.  Well, we all know how that worked out.  Orton now backs up Tony Romo for the Dallas Cowboys, Tebow is making Mark Sanchez feel more uncomfortable than one feels after eating cheap chinese food on longcar rides, and the Broncos have gone all-in on a quarterback who many feel will lead them to the promised land.  With Tebow already being a distant memory, how much success can Broncos fans expect out of the first year with Peyton Manning?  To figure this out, I think we need to look at the schedule.  Read more from Rant Sports >>>>

Peyton Manning’s Numbers Versus The AFC West - All things being equal, the vast majority of NFL teams (minus the Indianapolis Colts) would likely rather have Peyton Manning competing for them and not against them.  The Denver Broncos know the feeling.  In the nine games Manning has played against the Broncos (not including a game at the end of the 2004 season where his day was done after one drive), he has amassed a sensational 66.1% completion ratio, 24 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions.  Manning also averaged 276 yards per game and a 95.2 averaged quarterback rating.  Oh yeah…he went 8-1 as a starter against the Broncos during his career with the Colts.  Read more from Predominantly Orange >>>>

Do the Denver Broncos Have a Viable Backup for Peyton Manning? Fan’s Take - The biggest fear that any Denver Broncos fan will have going into the 2012 NFL season is what happens if Peyton Manning gets hurt in pre-season the first time he is sacked and is unable to play? Matt Prater’s new Broncos deal a long way from nearly being cut by Shanahan - When the Broncos signed kicker Matt Prater to a new four-year, $13 million deal Monday, it was a testament to how far Prater has come in the NFL.  After all, he had been released by three different teams — Lions, Dolphins and Falcons — before he even arrived in Denver late in the 2007 season and there was a moment in the 2008 season when then-head coach Mike Shanahan was talking about bringing in a replacement if Prater missed any more gameday kicks.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>
