Wednesday Headlines: Broncos Deny Chargers…Again

It seems the San Diego Chargers, now without a general manager and head coach, turned to Denver for some answers.

And were subsequently denied.

The Denver Post reports the Broncos turned down the Chargers’ request to interview director of player personnel Matt Russell for San Diego’s GM spot.  According to the NFL Network’s Albert Breer, Russell has no interest in any position outside of Denver.

The Chargers fired general manager A.J. Smith and head coach Norv Turner on Monday.  John Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, said the denial was made after discussion the request with Russell:

“Matt’s done a tremendous job with the Broncos and he’s got a very bright future ahead of him.”

Russell, who played linebacker at the University of Colorado in the 1990s, has been with the Broncos since 2009.

Staying on the subject of job vacancies, it seems the Buffalo Bills are now interested in Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.  The Bills have asked permission to meet with McCoy, and the Broncos will allow it, so long as the interview happens in Denver this weekend.  The Broncos don’t want any potential timing conflicts with playoff preparations now in full swing.   The Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears are also interested in McCoy, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Cardinals are ready to move quickly and hire ex-Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid.

As for Denver defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, a least one fellow Broncos blogger believes Del Rio is staying put.  Given the revolving doors at defensive coordinator for Denver – not to mention Del Rio’s head coaching past – that would be a huge milestone.

Tuesday Headlines: Denver Broncos Adapt to Short Week

In less than three days, the AFC West champion Denver Broncos will play at Oakland against the Raiders.

With such a short turnaround between games, it’s not your typical week in and around Dove Valley.  For starters, the first injury report is already out for both teams.  Curiously, neither team practiced today, so this injury report is the hypothetical “if there had been practice today” type of thing.  Among the highlights:

For Robert Ayers is back in Denver after missing much of last week due to the death of his father. According to the team, WR Matthew Willis (knee) and LB Wesley Woodyard (ankle) would have been held out of practice, and WR Brandon Stokley, who was inactive Sunday, would have participated on a limited basis.

Even though Denver has clinched a playoff spot, the Broncos know there’s room for improvement.  Head coach John Fox addressed the team’s turnover ratio, saying it’s not up to snuff with the NFL’s elite.  Fox used the 2003 Carolina Panthers, a team he coached to the Super Bowl, as an example:

“That’s a big reason why we reached the Super Bowl.  The important thing is getting in the tournament and then playing really well when you get in. … We want to start building for that and we want to start this week against Oakland.”

Saturday Headlines: Jack Del Rio Dodges Distractions

‘Tis the season for firings and hirings.  The coaching carousel is underway in college football, and is about to intensify in the NFL.

And among the names surfacing for a head coaching position for a former head coach himself: Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.  His name is already floating around at least one coaching position, California-Berkeley, but as Del Rio told the Denver Post:

“That’s not something anybody has talked to me about.  I can’t really comment on something that doesn’t exist.

“My concentration of late has been on getting my wife a birthday present and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.”

So Del Rio is only focused on the Denver Broncos for now.   Still, as I’ve mentioned before, I have little doubt he takes an NFL head coaching position in the offseason, and my hunch is Kansas City for no reason other than a hunch.

Thursday Headlines: This (Team) Too Shall Pass…

And pass…and pass some more.

It seems the Denver Broncos could very well feast on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense come Sunday at Sports Authority Field.  As the Denver Post’s Jeff Legwold points out, the Tampa Bay’s pass defense is…well…not the best in the league.   It’s actually the worst:

The Buccaneers have surrendered 51 pass plays this season of at least 20 yards. That’s a temple-rubbing number for any defensive coordinator. Four teams have had at least six completions of 20 yards or more in games against the Buccaneers this season.

And more grabbing of attention: Of the 18 touchdown passes the Buccaneers have surrendered this season, nine have been for 20 yards or more. In fact, three of the scoring passes have been 80 yards; two of those 80-yarders have been on third down.

That’s good news for Denver on a few obvious fronts: 1) Peyton Manning, and 2) the Broncos’ rushing game has struggled at times this season.

No reason to try and force it this weekend.

But…

Bucs head coach Greg Schiano believes stats can be deceiving.  He admits the secondary’s play has been “frustrating” at times, but insists the unit is improving, as he explained during a conference call Wednesday:

“We’re getting better.  You can’t for a minute complain about their effort, their work ethic. It’s a process. We just have to keep doing it. And it’s been my experience that when you do that, you get better.

“I can see (improvement).  You can see it on the practice tape. It’s coming. And we also could use more pass rush to help those guys out.”

Monday Headlines: Denver Broncos Extend Win Streak

What’s making headlines today?  Well, if the above title for this post didn’t give it away, it’s the Denver Broncos’ trouncing of the Carolina Panthers.

Read ‘em and enjoy…’Cause what else is better than reading about your team’s victory?

“We’re not perfect, but we have the right mindset about where we need to go.”

Denver Broncos blow out Panthers in Carolina, as Manning ties Marino – The Denver Post

…Manning can continue his quest at an accomplishment Favre never got — a second Super Bowl title. While such talk as a practical matter is premature, there is also evidence that Manning’s current team may have the goods to pull it off.

Friday Headlines: Porter Practices and Movemeber ‘Mo Bros’

Denver Broncos cornerback Tracy Porter was a full participant in Thursday’s practice – his first since full practice since Oct. 14 – but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s back to action.  Head coach John Fox says the team is taking things slow with Porter.

Even so, Porter admits his starting job is likely no longer his, which has the Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla wondering: Can Tracy Porter escape Broncos’ doghouse?

Without a trace of anger, Porter told me the team’s dissatisfaction with his performance dates to a home loss against Houston when Texans quarterback Matt Schaub passed for 284 yards and threw for two touchdowns against Porter’s side of the field.

Hey, I’m not upset (even though No. 22 is a fellow Indiana Hoosier); Chris Harris and Tony Carter have played brilliantly in Porter’s absence.  Backups outplaying starters is a good problem to have.  Sure beats the usual talent drop off.

Among the Broncos with fond Cincinnati memories, look no further than wide receiver Brandon Stokley.  Remember that crazy Week 1 finish in 2009?  (Wow, that seems so long ago now.)

  • SI.com: Linebacker Wesley Woodyard is a huge playmaker for the Broncos.

Manning wary of playing catch up against Brees - Peyton Manning didn’t need a full week off to realize his team had to fix its problem of disastrous first quarters.  In the six games before the Broncos’ bye week, Denver had lost five fumbles and thrown three interceptions all in the first quarter. Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Friday Edition)

Broncos looking for next men up front on offensive and defensive lines - If the question is injuries and the question has been posed to Broncos coach John Fox, the answer will be three words.  And they aren’t “woe is me, ” even if he might really be leaning that way.  ”Next man up,” Fox said. “That’s our philosophy here; that’s how we approach it.”  After the last few days at the Broncos’ Dove Valley complex, Fox has said those words quite a bit.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Friday Edition)

Broncos’ Elvis Dumervil, Von Miller pack combination punch if healthy - The guys who get paid to face the Broncos defense during the regular season know they won’t get to see the good stuff until September.  And the best of that good stuff will be what first-year coordinator Jack Del Rio does with a luxury most defensive coordinators don’t really have around the league. Del Rio has not one, but two edge rushers with the ability to lead the league in sacks.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos’ Jacob Tamme seizes chance to hone skills vs. elite cornerback - During his time at the University of Kentucky, Broncos tight end Jacob Tamme handled his business in the classroom well enough to earn academic All-Southeastern Conference honors in four consecutive seasons.  Which means he knows a good thing when he sees it.  And when Champ Bailey, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection, was ready to leave a drill this week as Tamme jumped in to line up, Tamme asked him to stay. Tamme asked him because he knows the return on working with a player like Bailey far outweighs the potential difficulty in facing one of the best defensive backs of his generation.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning finds target in Demaryius Thomas - Though wide receiver Eric Decker appeared to be quarterback Peyton Manning’s favorite target most of the first week of training camp, Decker did not fully participate Thursday. Manning, Offense Continue to Jell – Peyton Manning’s assimilation into the Denver Broncos offense isn’t complete, but after eight days of training camp, substantial progress has been made.  Manning showed a crisp connection with wide receiver Eric Decker in the opening days of camp. Broncos’ upgrade to Peyton Manning is no passing fancy –  It was a seven-on-seven drill midway through a training camp session, essentially pitch-and-catch for any quarterback and his wide receivers.  More than 4,000 fans wedged into the tree-shaded grassy banks overlooking the practice fields at Dove Valley, all eyes locked on Peyton Manning, the Denver Broncos’ marquee offseason acquisition.  Read more from USA Today >>>>

For Broncos, best training is across the line - The biggest benefit to training camp can often be working against teammates who are among the NFL’s elite at their position. Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno working his way back into lineup - Don’t count out running back Knowshon Moreno just yet.  On the fifth day of Broncos training camp, the former first-round pick was cleared to rejoin full-squad drills. Moreno, who had surgery to repair a torn ACL on Dec. 1, ran second behind starter Willis McGahee in 11-on-11 team drills Monday morning.  Moreno had been limited to 7-on-7 passing sessions and individual drills in the first few days of camp.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Making Plays at the Next Level - For most rookies, the first few days of training camp are spent with their heads spinning as they try to learn the playbook while keeping up with the fast pace of an NFL practice.  For linebacker Danny Trevathan, there’s also the fact that he’s trying to learn three different linebacker positions – all while practicing against a first-team offense led by four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Notebook: Miller Encouraged - Von Miller has seen more contact in the past three days than he did throughout the entire months of May and June.  On Saturday morning, the Broncos practiced in full pads for the first time this season. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos Might Surprise People in 2012 - Peyton Manning knows what he likes in his offensive weapons.
