Thursday Headlines: All Ravens All the Time

Well…almost.

Before diving into today’s smattering of Baltimore Ravens-related headlines, let’s first address the latest round of Power Rankings.

According to ESPN, the Denver Broncos are now No. 2 just behind the New England Patriots.  In fact, the AFC runs 1-2-3 as the Houston Texans round out the top three.

Remember earlier this season when the Power Rankings were NFC-heavy at the top?

Meanwhile in the Aerys Sports’ NFL Power Rankings, the Broncos are atop the AFC list.  (Note these Power Rankings separate teams by conference.)

For the record, FOX Sports and NFL Network agree with ESPN with No. 1, though NFL Network lists Denver at No. 4.

Other Headlines:

  • Baltimore Sun: Champ Bailey, ‘one of the greatest,’ has Ravens’ respect
  • Denver Broncos: The Broncos will look for the franchise’s first win in Baltimore against the Ravens on Sunday.
  • Denver Broncos: The Broncos know that there’s more to the Ravens than their highly-regarded defense.
  • Denver Post: Peyton Manning gives Broncos a different view of Baltimore
  • Denver Post: Ravens believe offense can improve with change in play callers

Champ Bailey Says Teammates “Believe in Each Other”

Need an afternoon break?  How’s five minutes with Champ Bailey sound?

The Denver Broncos cornerback was a guest on NFL Network’s ‘Around the League’ Wednesday, and if you’re like me, you missed the broadcast.

But fear not!  The full interview is available online.  Here is a breakdown:

When speaking about the Broncos’ three-game win streak, Bailey said the difference is “starting to believe in what we’re doing…believe in each other.”

As Bailey pointed out, all NFL teams have talent, but even the most talented teams sometimes fall short of expectations.  (You know who those teams are.)  There are several factors behind that, including team chemistry.   The Broncos have it.  Players trust one another.  Players care about one another.

Bailey takes his role as team leader seriously, especially when it comes to the play of his younger defensive teammates.  Bailey says he speaks with all players regularly, offering everything from pointers to advice – and that’s not limited to football.

Finally, Peyton Manning’s football preparedness is the stuff of legends, but that attention to detail has even taken the veteran Bailey by surprise.  Why?  Because Bailey now sees Manning’ preparedness daily; that’s a whole lot different than the handful of times Bailey and Manning faced off as opponents.

Time To Vote…For the 2013 Pro Bowl

‘Tis the voting season…

But here’s an election of sorts that hopefully won’t pollute your Facebook timeline.

Voting for the 2013 Pro Bowl is underway until Monday, Dec. 17.  A total of 26 Broncos are nominated, and you can vote here.  The AFC and NFL teams will be announced on NFL Network on Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Fan voting accounts for one-third of results.

You can watch (there are so many jokes to make there…) the 2013 Pro Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 5:00 p.m. MST on NBC.  Yes, the Pro Bowl is kinda sorta lame, and yes, the NFL is considering dropping it altogether, but being selected is still an honor for players.

Last season, six Broncos were selected: Champ Bailey, Ryan Clady, Brian Dawkins, Elvis Dumervil, Willis McGahee, and Von Miller.

Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Friday Edition)

It’s only the preseason, but a win feels great nonetheless, right?  DHF will have reaction and insight from the Denver Broncos 31-3 preseason victory later, but first, here are the day’s headlines.

Peyton Manning has his moments in Broncos’ 31-3 rout of Chicago Bears - He is Peyton Manning, not Perfect Peyton.  There were encouraging throws. There was a discouraging interception. There was a lucky bounce. There was an unlucky deflection. There was evidence of rust. There were glimpses from a successful past in a 31-3 Broncos rout.  All in all, Peyton Manning showed the football world Thursday night in a preseason game against the Chicago Bears that he is back. Back playing quarterback again. Back playing not for the blue and white Indianapolis Colts, his team of the previous 14 seasons, but for the white, blue and orange Broncos.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno and rookie DL Derek Wolfe strong in exhibition - Think of it as a summer concert series.  While Peyton Manning’s return to the field after 19 months between in-game appearances was the headliner for the evening at Soldier Field, the Broncos had plenty of other acts they wanted to see on the main stage, including a running back trying to claw his way back up the depth chart and a rookie defensive lineman who flashed big-time potential.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Another Step on the Comeback Path - First it was participating in the team’s offseason conditioning program, followed by OTAs, minicamps and then came training camp.  Thursday, quarterback Peyton Manning checked off another milestone on his road back from the injury that forced him to miss the entire 2011 season.  Though he played only 12 snaps in Denver’s preseason-opening 31-3 win at Chicago, Manning said it felt good to get back on the field.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Preseason Opens With Convincing Win - Thursday night at rainy Soldier Field, quarterback Peyton Manning took his first snaps in an NFL game in nearly two years.  The four-time NFL MVP kicked off a 31-3 Broncos win against the Chicago Bears by leading the Denver offense on an 11-play, 60-yard drive into the red zone, but a tipped pass ended the drive with an interception.  ”It’s disappointing, obviously, any time you get down in the red zone and don’t come away with points,” said Manning, who called Thursday’s preseason opener “a decent start.”  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos built to win by John Elway - Had John Elway said it on any other day, the line he delivered when quarterback Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos would’ve carried much more weight.  ”My goal,” the Broncos legend-turned-executive said March 20, “is to make Peyton Manning the best quarterback to ever play the game.”  Nice. Tidy. And splashy enough to make it into every news story that chronicled the league-shaking event. But the natural follow-up question was never broached, maybe because all of us in attendance were trying to delve into the past — to chronicle the mind-blowing two weeks of Manning’s unemployment — rather than peer into the future.  Read more from NFL Network >>>>

Broncos say Tebow could cause Jets controversy - Mention the Jets’ unorthodox quarterback plans to Tim Tebow’s former Denver teammates, then watch them smile, turn their heads and chuckle.  Even the Broncos players who number themselves among Tebow’s biggest fans struggle to see how the Jets are going to make him sharing the duties with starter Mark Sanchez work for very long — if at all.  “I’ve always been told that if you say you have two quarterbacks, it means you really don’t have confidence in your [starter],” Broncos Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller told The Post recently. “I don’t know how that’s going to work, but Tim is definitely going to make it tough for Sanchez.”  Read more from New York Post >>>>

Manning back in town for charity event, talks Luck - The peculiarity of the situation was hard to miss. This evening at the downtown J.W. Peyton Manning: Denver Broncos Quarterback’s Funniest Plays off the Field - The recently acquired, future Hall of Fame quarterback, Peyton Manning is not only one of the best quarterbacks to play the game. He’s also hilarious!  When the Denver Broncos signed him at the start of the offseason they weren’t just getting an awesome quarterback, but also someone who could make teammates roll on the floor laughing.  Let’s take a look back through memory lane at some of his funniest moments off the field.  Read more from Bleacher Report >>>>

Jerry Franklin to Denver Broncos: Video Highlights, Scouting Report and Analysis - When thinking about inside linebackers, Jerry Franklin isn’t the first one that comes to mind. John Elway for Manager of the Year - While fans of former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow will likely vehemently disagree, I’d have to put John Elway, Broncos executive VP of football operations, in the running for manager of the year. Analyzing Broncos’ Home Field Advantage - Many say that Mile High has lost it’s magic. What I mean is that the Broncos’ home field advantage isn’t what it used to be. According to the NFL Network’s “top-10 home field advantages of all time,” Mile High Stadium ranks second on that list.  From 1960-2000, no team wanted to come to Denver and deal with the deadly combination of high altitude and rowdy fans.  Read more from Predominantly Orange >>>>

NFL Draft Day Three: Denver Broncos Focus on Defense

DHF will have more analysis later, because it’s impossible to have too much analysis, but here’s a look at the Broncos’ draft picks in Day Three in the NFL Draft.  Of the four players drafted, three are on defense:

Round 4: #101, Omar Bolden (CB) – Arizona State

The Skinny: College teammate of QB Brock Osweiler, who was drafted by Denver in Round 2.  Bolden missed all of the 2011 season with a torn ACL.  Had he not been injured, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock suspected Bolden was 2nd round-caliber.

Round 4: #108, Philip Blake (C) – Baylor

The Skinny: The 26-year-old Canadian was Robert Griffin III’s center in 2011, but Blake has – and will for the Broncos – play guard.

Round 5: #137, Malik Jackson (DT) – Tennessee

The Skinny: A USC transfer, Jackson played defensive tackle last season at Tennessee, but has also played defensive end – dating back to his days at USC.  Jackson expects to play DE for Denver.

Round 6: #188, Danny Trevathan (LB) – Kentucky

The Skinny: Let the comparisons to Wesley Woodyard (also a Kentucky Wildcat) begin.  Trevathan is a bit undersized at linebacker, but is relentless and physical.

NFL draft: Broncos trade down twice, out of first round - The Broncos, apparently tired of waiting with the No. 25 draft pick, ultimately decided, what’s one more day?  With coveted defensive tackles Dontari Poe and Michael Brockers and cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick taken midway through the first round, the Broncos wound up making two trades that essentially gave them one extra fourth-round pick — No. 101 overall — in exchange for moving back from No. 25 overall to No. 36.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Kiszla: Elway fails to pull the trigger in first round of NFL draft - In the NFL draft, an old quarterback did what he knows best: John Elway passed.  On the greatest night of anticipation in American sports, the Broncos got cold feet and stood on the sideline.  As a teenager, did Elway have trouble asking a date to the prom?  Come on, John. Pull the trigger.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Analysis: Winners and losers from NFL draft’s first round - 1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14) The pick: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford, 6-4, 234 Comment: It will take a physically gifted player with a strong mentally to follow Peyton Manning in Indy. Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Tuesday Edition)

Elway says Broncos will choose impact vs. position in NFL draft - John Elway is hoping the 25th selection in this week’s NFL draft is an impact player. The Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations said the team won’t base any of its picks on need as much as finding players who can contribute immediately.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos transfer traditional playbooks to iPads for 2012 season - The Denver Broncos are tossing out the tradition of printing 500-page playbooks every week for each of the 120 players, coaches, scouts and other personnel.  This season, the team will hand out iPads that feature the week’s game plan, scouting reports, video clips and other relevant data.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Dusty Saunders: ESPN, NFL Network are feeling another draft - NFL fans love to debate talent.  Who’s the best quarterback — Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees? Broncos looking for immediate help for Manning - The Denver Broncos are building around new quarterback Peyton Manning with the immediate future in mind. No three-year plans, no long-term solutions, no projects. Not anymore.  Manning is 36 and coming off a season in which he had more neck operations (four) than passes (zero), and after committing $96 million to the league’s only four-time MVP, the Broncos need to do everything they can to see to it that their investment pays immediate dividends.  Read more from Associated Press >>>>

John Elway: Peyton Manning not a part of Broncos’ draft process - The Denver Broncos have begun the process of installing a Peyton Manning-friendly offensive system, and the acquisition of the Pro Bowl quarterback has changed the type of offensive players they’ll target during the NFL draft. That means that instead of drafting players better suited for an option-based, run-heavy system the team used under Tim Tebow, the Broncos will look for players comfortable with Manning’s no-huddle, audible-heavy style.  Read more from NFL.com >>>>

From 2 to 25 - A lot can happen before pick No. 25.  In 2011, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway’s first year in his position, Denver had the No. 2 overall choice – which it used to select the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year Von Miller.  This year’s draft will play out very differently for the team’s front office, with the Broncos having to wait until the 25th choice to make their pick.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Dawkins Finds ‘Complete Peace’ - Brian Dawkins needed some time away from the game.  He needed to step back, pray and ensure that his choice whether or not to retire wouldn’t be based on emotion.  But as he spoke to Denver media on the phone Monday, it was clear the decision itself was an emotional one.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>
