Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Friday Edition)

Broncos QB Peyton Manning clearly on the marquee in Denver - Peyton Manning is about to play his first game for keeps — his first real game with the Broncos. His first regular-season game since missing last year with a neck injury.  He will play his first game since the 2010 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have played in three of the past seven Super Bowls and had the NFL’s No. 1-rated defense last year.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos’ Stokley, Dreessen respond to Greeley NFL jersey ban - Not to stereotype or anything but Brandon Stokley doesn’t even have a tattoo.  Yet, his No. 14 is forbidden in the Greeley-Evans School District because the number could have possible associations with a local gang.  ”I think it’s sad that it’s come to that,” Stokley said. “We love the support, especially from kids. I have a son in the third grade and he loves to wear jerseys. It’s sad that the circumstances surrounding this have made it come to this.”  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Terry Frei: Elvis Dumervil needs to stand up as leader of Broncos - Elvis Dumervil was soft-spoken and polite about it. No, he said, he wasn’t going to talk to me.  This was during the Broncos’ open locker-room period Wednesday at Dove Valley, and the veteran defensive end had passed through to pick up some things at his stall.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Notebook: Two-Headed Monster The Steelers offense presents two primary threats – two major strengths, two ways it will try to beat you. ”(The biggest challenge is) stopping that run game,” said cornerback Champ Bailey, who has faced Pittsburgh five times in his career. “You know one thing about the Steelers — they’re always going to try to run the ball and establish their run game. Then, contain (quarterback) Big Ben (Roethlisberger). He’s one of the most dangerous at what he does. He hasn’t been a two-time Super Bowl winner for no reason. He’s a great quarterback.”  Defensive tackle Justin Bannan is another veteran on the Broncos who has seen his fair share of Pittsburgh. Bannan has played nine games against the Steelers in his 10-year career – seven during his four-year stint with Baltimore.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

NFL Rumors: Denver Broncos Will Play All Four Running Backs – When the Denver Broncos released their first regular season depth chart on Monday, and a few eyebrows were raised at the running back position. Willis McGahee was obviously still listed as the number one back, but Knowshon Moreno had moved up to the second spot. The third and fourth spots are occupied by Lance Ball and Ronnie Hillman respectively. It’s fun to look at depth charts but in this instance, it doesn’t mean very much. All four of the Bronco running backs are going to play, and when they play depends on the situation. They all bring something different to the offense.  Read more from Rant Sports >>>>

Broncos unlikely to charge Knowshon Moreno with return duties - Q: Does Knowshon Moreno, provided that he is healthy … have the speed and talent to be the Broncos punt/kick returner?  A: David, Moreno is just eight months removed from surgeryto repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. Peyton Manning drew Broncos’ attention by making point after point - As folks both near and far continue to try and wrap their heads around the idea of Peyton Manning wearing a Broncos helmet, there continues to be a segment of the local football-loving population that still wonders why the Broncos tried so hard to bring in the future Hall of Famer in the first place.  Never mind the fact that there really isn’t a better reason than he is a future Hall of Famer with more than a few passes remaining on the odometer.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Osweiler’s Eyes, Ears Open - Rookies are often described as “swimming” early in training camp.  Even with the advantage of a rookies-only minicamp earlier in the offseason, when the pads come on and plays are coming in fast and furious, it can get overwhelming at times.  For a quarterback — the leader of the offense — all that is taken up another notch.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Choosing between Thomas, Decker - Who will have the better fantasy season: Demaryius Thomas or Eric Decker?  The Denver Broncos have a pair of third-year wide receivers poised to make a major impact this season in Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. They were already trending in the right direction based on their development last season, and their outlooks became even sunnier when the Broncos added Peyton Manning in the offseason.  If the combination of Thomas and Decker could have their moments with Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow at quarterback, just imagine what they could do with a healthy Manning running the show. Broncos fans are having flashbacks of Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey, who each had 1,000-yard seasons from 1998-2000.  Read more from ESPN >>>>

Denver Broncos training camp ‘surreal’ for QB Brock Osweiler - When a hectic pace slows in Englewood, Colo., where the Denver Broncos hold training camp, former Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler thinks back to where he was a year ago, and he can’t help but be amazed.  ”In fact, (former ASU receiver) Gerell Robinson is my roommate here at training camp, and we talk about that sometimes,” Osweiler said in a telephone interview. “One year ago we were getting ready for fall camp at ASU, and there was so much anticipation for the season and we were talking Rose Bowl and there was a lot of excitement. But then that season flew by, the whole training process went by, and now I’m in football camp with the Denver Broncos. It’s pretty surreal.”  Read more fro AZ Central >>>>

Denver Broncos News: Peyton Manning’s Success May Hinge On One Player - As important as many of the additions were to the Denver Broncos this past offseason, the offensive line remains perhaps the most vital component for the team’s success – particularly due to the new guy who will be taking snaps.  Protecting Peyton Manning might priority No. 1 for Denver in 2012.  With training camp already underway, the Broncos have begun negotiating contract talks with Pro Bowl left tackle Ryan Clady. As of Monday, there has been no word of a deal in place, which is cause for concern.  Read more from International Business Times >>>>

Peyton Manning takes Broncos into the no-huddle - Five practices into his first Denver Broncos training camp, Peyton Manning finally got into what he knows best: the no-huddle offense.  Manning and the first-team offense went into the no-huddle during one of the final periods of Monday’s practice, and he wasted little time carving the defense, hitting Eric Decker on a 40-yard post route on the first play of the period.  ”It was game simulation,” said safety Rahim Moore, who along with cornerback Tracy Porter was beaten by Decker. “It also gets you ready for getting the calls in quicker from the coaching staff and relaying them to us and going out there and playing.”  Read more from CBS Sports >>>>

Broncos, players fully embracing social media - The Denver Broncos were the first team to announce the firing of a head coach (Josh McDaniels, 2010) in NFL history and have fully embraced the social media movement over the past two seasons.  The Broncos have been tweeting since 2007, but their social media movement was spearheaded by John Elway in early 2011, shortly after Elway returned to the team as a football operations executive.  Since joining Twitter, Elway has announced trades, signings and cuts over the social media platform — keeping fans in the loop with instantly updated timelines.  Read more from Bronco Talk >>>>

NOTE: DHF will be at Denver Broncos training camp bright and early this morning. Follow on Twitter for photos and updates.

With Day One down, Broncos look forward to rest of season - One down, plenty of high hopes to go.  The Broncos formally opened training camp practices Thursday with a future Hall of Famer at quarterback in Peyton Manning and a record crowd on hand to see it.  It was standing-room only, an enthusiastic first step to the marathon still to come.  ”Any time you’re a performer, whether it’s sports or any kind of entertainment, the crowd gets you going,” said Broncos head coach John Fox.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Aurora shootings resonate with Broncos receiver Eric Decker - Both here and everywhere, the shootings at the Aurora theater last week stirred thoughts and feelings in nearly every able-minded, feeling person.  For Broncos receiver Eric Decker, the tragedy caused a flashback.  ”It brought back some tough memories,” Decker said. “It sparked some emotions. It sparked memories of what happened in high school.”  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Peyton Manning hype can’t compare to John Elway’s rookie Broncos camp - I’m looking at an ancient photograph of John Elway.  He’s unloading what looks to be a station wagon. He’s got a bag slung over his shoulder, a giant suitcase in one hand and a stuffed gym bag in the other.  His thick blonde hair, cut in Prince Valiant style, is topped with a baseball cap. He’s wearing short shorts and tube socks up to his knees. He’s got a goofy grin on his face.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning the man again after steady progress - Let’s go back to that mysterious time at Duke University.  It was on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, and Peyton Manning was giving a private audition for the Broncos’ brass, coaches and medical team. He threw about 60 passes of various lengths and patterns. Publicly, the Broncos reported Manning threw great. Privately, while they were encouraged by what they saw, the Broncos’ decision makers knew Manning wasn’t fully recovered from the neck surgeries that forced the star quarterback to miss the 2011 season.  Read more from the Denver Post >>>>

Training Camp 2012: Day Two - Just about 10 minutes into Friday’s training camp practice, huge — and nearby — bolts of lightning caused a delay in the session. As rain began to fall, the team ran off the field — as seen above — and fans were cleared from the sidelines.  Read more from Denver Broncos >>>>

Denver Broncos: Players with the Most to Gain in Camp - Training camp is officially underway for the Denver Broncos in Englewood, Colorado. Fans are flocking out to get that first glimpse of Peyton Manning in orange and blue.  But training camp is the setting for players to step up and make the most of their opportunity to prove they belong on the team.  We all know Manning, Demaryius Thomas, Willis McGahee, Von Miller and Champ Bailey will make this squad, but what about the players we aren’t familiar with, or the ones that may be on the bubble?  Read more from Bleacher Report >>>>

Denver Broncos: Peyton Manning’s 3 Favorite Plays He Ran in Indianapolis - For 13 seasons Peyton Manning had grown quite comfortable running just a handful of passing plays. History isn’t with Manning, even if his wits still are - First test passed: Peyton Manning is still Peyton Manning — at least when there’s a microphone in his mouth.  There will be just as many questions for the Denver Broncos’ new signal caller Friday when he takes the field around 2:20 p.m. for the team’s second day of training camp. If his Day 2 answers live up to those he gave on Day 1, the days of robotic rhetoric (Tim Tebow), smug looks (Jay Cutler)  and silence (Kyle Orton) may start to seem like distant memories.  Read more from KDVR >>>>

Team Confirms Knowshon Moreno Arrested for DUI

Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno has been charged with DUI, failing to have insurance, and careless driving, according to The Denver Post.

KDVR reported Moreno was pulled over Feb. 1 on I-25 near Quincy Ave. in Denver for speeding in a construction zone.  According to KDVR, the officer smelled alcohol and Moreno performed poorly on a sobriety test.  He was taken to a detox facility.

Knowshon Moreno's arraignment on DUI charges is set for next month. (personal photo)

KDVR also reported the Bentley Moreno was driving had the personalized license plates of “SAUCED.”

Ooooh.  Okay then…

Court records show Moreno will be arraigned on March 2.

The 24-year-old tore his ACL in November and finished the season in injured reserve.  Moreno is entering the fourth year of a five-year deal with the Broncos.  He was Denver’s first-round draft pick in 2009.

The team released the following statement Monday afternoon:

“We take the incident involving Knowshon Moreno very seriously, and are thoroughly reviewing this matter.  Our organization will continue to gather information and closely monitor this issue while the legal process takes it course.”

The New “Man In Motion” Is Apparently Tim Tebow

For those needing to chase away the Tuesday blahs…

John Parr, the voice behind the 80’s hit “St Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion),” updated and re-recorded his signature song in homage to Tim Tebow.  I first heard of this rewrite a few months ago, early into the nation’s heighten Tebowmania obsession, when Parr performed “Tim Tebow’s Fire” on ESPN’s painfully annoying SportsNation.  Parr told KDVR Monday:

“I was inspired by Tim Tebow so I wanted to modify the lyrics…in his honor of the way that he lives his life as being a great example.”
