Insider’s Look at Appeals Court Hearing [LIVE UPDATES]

The NFL lockout, which this week passed the 80 day mark, is once again the talk of a St. Louis courtroom.

At issue today, whether the lockout should continue.  We’ve been down the legal wrangling road before, but this latest chapter could a turning point.

Dare I suggest we may be nearing the end?

Thanks to this week’s clandestine meeting between the league and players’ representatives, the pendulum has swung to cautious optimism.  We’re no longer barraged with rumblings of game cancellations, but rather word of a possible compromise by month’s end.  As with any news story, especially those involving the legal system, things change; news is fluid, so how long that “breakthrough is on the horizon” feeling lasts is anyone’s guess.

Aerys Sports’ St. Louis Rams reporter Patty Hsieh secured media credentials and is at the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals RIGHT NOW for today’s proceedings.  She’s lucky – very lucky; only about 25 media members (from around the country) are in court today.

Patty is tweeting from court, but I’m including her tweets in a live thread below.  She’s offering a play-by-play glimpse very few others have  It’s something we’re extremely proud of.   Most recent updates are posted at the top.

10:18: Got a big smile and hug from @Chester_Pitts. He’s off to the airport to catch his flight.

10:14: Waiting for both sides to exit the courtroom.

10:11: Court adjourned

10:08: Judge Bye: We will take into consideration and make a ruling in due course.

10:07: Clements brings up how players have said their enjoying their time off during this lockout. Wow, he went there!

10:06: Judge Bye speaks! Asking Clements about irreparable harm.

9:54: Olsen is still trying to convince the court the players have indeed dissolved the union. Judges don’t seem to be buying what he’s selling.

9:49: CORRECTION: OLSEN SAID “The league desperately wants players to be a union, so they can violate the antitrust laws.”

9:43: Clement: “The league desperately wants players to be a union, so they can violate the antitrust laws.”. BAM!

9:42: Again, I’m puzzled Judge Bye didn’t ask Paul Clement ANYTHING. He still hasn’t said a word yet.

9:41: Olsen: I’m not sure I understand the question. – Uh oh… Olsen is taking a beating by judges Benton and Colloton.

9:38: Judges Benton (smiling) and Colloton debating with Olsen over the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

9:33: I have to say Paul Clements was much easier to understand compared to Theodore Olsen.

9:27: Clements rests his case. Players counsel Theodore Olsen speaking now.

9:26: Surprisingly no word from Judge Bye the lone dissenting vote on the stay ruling

9:23: Clements: A lockout is suicide if it doesn’t facilitate a resolution in the labor agreement.
