Picture This: A Very Different Denver Broncos

Follow me on Twitter and you’ll notice I like taking pictures.  Being that phones have also become primary cameras, I’m usually snapping photos of just about everything that sparks my interest (this includes signs referencing Indiana or Hoosiers, and basically anything with an Angry Bird on it).  As a consequence, the cameras that I have that don’t also allow me to check my email or make calls have sat largely unused.

Recently though, I had to pull out one of the “just a cameras.”  Checking the memory card I stumbled across my last big photo shoot.  Dozens of snapshots from the Denver Broncos training camp in 2011.  My first reaction was, “Man, I can’t wait for football to return!”  As I scrolled through the photos, I had another thought, “Hmm, I’m gonna need to get back to camp this year as most of these photos are of people no longer with the Denver Broncos.”

Denver’s roster moves aren’t any sort of new revelation.  We’ve been aware of every move since that cold, disappointing, January night in New England.  It’s just the context of it all.  At the time the shutter clicked, many of the players in these shots weren’t just on the team, they were guys that would need to be key components if the Broncos had any chance of improving from a 4-12 season.  Now these pictures are like the end of a movie where there’s a freeze frame of each character accompanied by a blurb about what became of them:

“Brandon Lloyd reunited with Josh McDaniels after a midseason trade to St. Louis.  The Rams finished with a losing record and Lloyd and McDaniels are now with New England.”

“Kyle Orton was benched, then traded to the Chiefs.  He started against Denver in Week 17 and won…7-3.  He’s now backing up Tony Romo.”

“Eddie Royal continued to battle injury.  He signed with San Diego in 2012.”

“Brian Dawkins played with his usual passion until injury ended his season.  He retired in 2012.”

“Tim Tebow led the Broncos to the AFC Divisional Playoffs in one of the most insane, inexplicable runs in NFL history.  He was traded to the Jets in 2012 for a 4th round draft pick.”

It’s not like half the team departed, but think about those names, and what they were a year ago.  Chances are every Broncos fan at one point or another thought something like, “Hey, Brandon Lloyd is a weapon, and Eddie Royal is due to get back on the track he started with his rookie season.”  Or maybe, “You know, Orton can move the ball, and if Tebow gets involved more in the Red Zone this team could score some points.”

When the Broncos return to Dove Valley a little more than a month from now, the pictures are bound to be quite different.  So will the mental images fans have for the pending season.  Instead of Lloyd and Royal “maybe making some noise,” it will be “Thomas and Decker must deliver.”  Whereas there were infinite theories about how Orton and Tebow could effectively coexist, it’s now going to be about how many points Peyton Manning can put on the scoreboard…and how far the offensive line can keep defenders away from him.  The veteran leadership and defensive heart of Dawkins won’t be lurking in the secondary.  Now it will be about veterans holding tight in the secondary while Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil, and a must-be-productive defensive front create chaos in two seconds or less.

Sitting at training camp last year, the overarching thought was, “Which of these guys might surprise us?”  This year, I have a feeling that sentiment will be replaced with, “Are these guys ready to win a Super Bowl?”

An entirely different picture indeed.

Denver Dailies: Broncos Roundup (Sunday Edition)

No telling what Gaffney, Lloyd would’ve accomplished had they remained with Broncos - Today’s question about the Broncos comes from Chris Hammond in Eugene, Ore.: Q: Do you think the Broncos regretted giving away Jabar Gaffney to Mike Shanahan in the preseason when depth at wide receiver was such an issue, especially in the playoffs? Sure, the Broncos wanted to develop their young receivers in (Demaryius) Thomas, (Matthew) Willis and Eric Decker, but it seems like there is always a place for a good solid veteran. One could almost say the same thing for Brandon Lloyd, but at least I can understand if he wasn’t a positive locker-room presence and/or if they wanted to get some value out of him knowing he wouldn’t sign for 2012 and beyond.  Read more from The Denver Post >>>>

Welcome Back to the Offense, Demaryius Thomas

Funny how one game can change the entire tone of a planned post.

A few days ago, I put together a list of stories – a To-Write, if you will – for Denver Horse Force.  Just to be clear, I mean an actual pen-to-paper list.  Near the top of said list: will Demaryius Thomas ever make an impact for the Denver Broncos?  Take a look for yourself:

Then Sunday happened: an actual-honest-to-goodness Demaryius Thomas sighting.  And then some.

Before going any further, let’s look back – as in pre-Sunday.  After missing significant time with an injury earlier this season Thomas was essentially an ‘also played’ in an offense that was run first, run some more, complete a couple of passes to Eric Decker, then run again.

It seemed this edge-of-your-seat Tim Tebow era had little room for the oft-injured Thomas, who was well on his way to becoming the Broncos’ newest incarnation of Knowshon Moreno.  Entering Sunday, through six games, Thomas had only seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Let's hope we haven't seen the last of Demaryius Thomas. (courtesy Jeffrey Beall)

Hardly the type of numbers you want to see out of a first-round draft pick.

Perhaps Thomas was struggling to get open in passing situations.  Maybe offseason Achilles surgery affected his assimilation into the offense.  Whatever the situation is/was, Thomas routinely found himself outshined by fellow second-year receiver Eric Decker and just about every other receiver on the roster.

But thanks to Tim “Southpawesome” Tebow, we got a long awaited look at a possible preview of coming attractions.  Thomas’ four catches – all in the second half – counted for 144 of Tebow’s 203 passing yards, and those two touchdowns came inches away from being three.  Putting that in perspective, in a single game Thomas generated more yards, more touchdowns, and more than half the receptions he’d posted in the previous six games this season.  Thomas outmanned and outmuscled Minnesota’s dazed secondary, a secondary likely expecting a “walk through” at the Metrodome.

This isn’t to suggest Decker has been supplanted as Alpha Receiver, but there could – and should – be a friendly competition brewing.  Thomas’ emergence, if Sunday’s performance was an ‘emergence,’ can only help the Broncos’ chances in 2011 and beyond.

Like Brandon Lloyd before him, Decker is the primary focus for opposing secondaries – even in the Broncos’ revamped, Tebow-centric scheme.  Eddie Royal has yet to assert himself as a reliable threat, at least since his rookie season.  Matthew Willis shows promise, and could get more reps after accidentally knocking Royal out both literally and figuratively, but it’s Thomas’ strength, size, and speed that makes him an attractive matchup for a Denver offense that’s showing it may be a bit more than a running gimmick.

Thomas said Minnesota’s secondary “kind of forgot” about him Sunday.

The secret might be out.

Brandon Lloyd Isn’t Surprised with Tim Tebow’s Success

Not even two months ago, Brandon Lloyd wanted out of Denver.

He landed in St. Louis via a mid-October trade, and thanks to his 30 receptions with the Rams, earned Denver a 5th round draft pick in 2012.

There’s still some online debate on whether Lloyd was the “source” in a less-than-flattering Yahoo! Sports article on Tim Tebow published back in August.  Maybe he was, though I tend to think not, but I don’t know.  I do know that Lloyd’s latest Tim Tebow comments are complimentary.

Brandon Lloyd wishes the Broncos had more "clarity" with its quarterback situation earlier this season. (courtesy Jeffrey Beall)

Speaking with CSNBayArea ahead of Sunday’s Rams at 49ers game, Lloyd, who played for San Francisco 2003-05, said he wished the Broncos had resolved the quarterback issue before the season, a sentiment I think many fans would agree with:

“This is what I was talking about in the summertime when (Kyle) Orton was on the trading block.  Hey, trade him now so we can go into the Tebow era. Let’s get it over with and see if he’s got it. Let’s build the offense around him. Let’s do that. But don’t have a starting quarterback and run an offense and the anticipation for Tim to play be so powerful that it just distracts the team.”

With all due respect, the Broncos did attempt a trade, and that deal with Miami never materialized.   As for building an offense around Tebow, Lloyd does have a point, though the lockout-filled offseason did complicate matters somewhat.  (That’s actually the subject of an upcoming DHF post.  Stay tuned.)

When asked if he’s surprised if the Tebow-led Broncos are succeeding, Lloyd said:

“Not at all. That’s what I saying back in the summertime. Just gives us something to believe in. All I wanted in the summertime was some clarity. Make it clear who the quarterback is going to be, and then we can buy into it. It doesn’t matter what the offense is. It doesn’t matter what you do. We’re the best athletes in the world at what we do. It doesn’t matter what we do, as long as we believe in it and we’re all executing it, it’ll work. And that’s the never-ending quest for every team. Just believe in what we’re trying to show you and it’ll work. So, no, I’m not surprised at all.”

Cassius Vaughn Has “Significant” Leg Injury

Broncos cornerback Cassius Vaughn has what head coach John Fox is calling a “significant” leg injury.

The Denver Post reports Vaughn broke his fibula during a 36-yard kickoff return in the first quarter of Sunday’s game at San Diego.  The Broncos have not put Vaughn on injured reserve, but with only five regular season games remaining, his return this season is in doubt.  Fox told the media Monday:

“[The injury] is significant enough and we’re still determining the right course.”

Brandon Lloyd's legacy in Denver is a 5th round draft pick in 2012. (personal photo)

The Broncos did not sign another player to the roster after last week’s release of quarterback Kyle Orton.  If Vaughn is placed on IR, the team could add two players to round out the 53-man roster.

Broncos Get 5th Round Draft Pick

I tweeted this yesterday, but here it is again for the non-Twitter crowd out there…

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd caught his 30th pass of the season for St. Louis, giving the Broncos a 5th round pick in next year’s NFL Draft.  If Lloyd didn’t reach the 30-reception milestone, Denver would have received a 6th round pick.

The Broncos traded the Pro Bowl WR to St. Louis in October.

Revisiting the Lloyd Line…Three Weeks Later

Four games ago, Kyle Orton was starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos.

Brandon Lloyd...remember him? (personal photo)

Enter Tim Tebow.

Four games ago, Brandon Lloyd was the Broncos’ top receiver.

Remember him?  He’s now in St. Louis.

Shortly after Lloyd’s trade to the Rams, Denver Horse Force introduced the ‘Lloyd Line,’ a so-called measuring stick for Denver’s remaining wide receivers.  The Lloyd Line was calculated by totaling statistics from Lloyd’s 22 starts in Denver divided by number of starts.  (There’s some rounding involved, too.)

5 REC, 84 YDS, 16.1 AVG, .5 TD

Now three games removed from Lloyd’s Broncos tenure – and three full games into Tebow’s – it’s not surprising no wide receiver has equaled Lloyd’s input.  The closest is Eric Decker, who’s led the Broncos in receiving yards two of the last three games:

  • Versus Miami: 2 REC, 21 YDS, 10.5 AVG
  • Versus Detroit: 6 REC, 72 YDS, 12.0 AVG, 1 TD
  • Versus Oakland: 3 REC, 47 YDS, 15.7 AVG, 1 TD

Approximate average: 4 REC, 47 YDS, 12.7 AVG, .7 TD

It goes without saying (though I’m doing just that) Denver’s offense has changed with Tebow at the helm, so take any wide receiver comparison with a grain of salt.  Still, this gives you an idea how the Broncos offense is adapting to life after Lloyd.  With a 2-1 record, I’d say well.

As for Lloyd, his three-game average in St. Louis is slightly down from Denver: 6 REC, 69 YDS, 12.4 AVG, .3 TD

Regardless of the “Tebow Verdict” (whenever that comes), the Broncos should still consider bolstering the receiving corps, because as DHF has covered before…and before that…Denver lacks a serious threat at the position.

With that, Justin Blackmon is all kinds of awesome.  Just sayin’.
