Victory Bell Stays in Chapel Hill
The Duke Blue Devils football team made three comebacks on Saturday, but none were enough to defeat their rival North Carolina Tarheels. The Blue Devils lost 37-21 in their final game of the season, as the Tarheels keep the Victory Bell for the eighth straight year.
In the first quarter, Duke quarterback Sean Renfree threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Thompson to tie the game at 7-7. With just 1:22 to go in the first half and down 20-7, Renfree struck again. He threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder with heavy pressure to cut the deficit to 20-14. On the play, UNC picked up a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty which was assessed on the kickoff. It was the game’s third 15-yard penalty of the half (two on Duke).
After being sack early in the third quarter and fumbling (which led to a UNC field goal and a 23-14 deficit), Renfree’s day was done and in came Anthony Boone. On the Blue Devils next drive, Boone threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Varner to cut the UNC lead to 23-21. Boone also caught a 21-yard pass from Crowder on that drive.
Unfortunately, that was all the scoring Duke mustered. It took UNC just a little over a minute to score another touchdown, as Tarheels quarterback Bryn Renner threw two passes for 20 yard gains to go along with an 18-yard TD pass to Dwight Jones.
