After the Duke men’s basketball team went 1-1 this past week, they dropped one spot in the AP Poll to third (and down to fourth in the USA Today Coaches Poll). Gonzaga is the new number one, which is the first time in the school’s history.
The Blue Devils were upset once again on the road, this time at Virginia. On Saturday, in their rematch against Miami, Ryan Kelly returned from injury and they beat the Hurricanes. However, Gonzaga went 2-0 and won the WCC regular season title.
The new AP top ten looks like this: Gonzaga, Indiana, Duke, Kansas, Georgetown, Miami, Michigan, Louisville, Kansas State, and Michigan State.
After Saturday’s loss, Miami dropped to sixth in the AP Poll (or seventh in the Coaches Poll). North Carolina is on the cusp of being ranked in both polls.
The men next play Virginia Tech on Tuesday before playing rival UNC on Saturday night to end the regular season on ESPN.
The Duke women’s basketball team also went 1-1 last week and dropped to sixth in the polls. They lost their first ACC game on Thursday night at Miami, before beating rival UNC to close out the regular season on Senior Day at Cameron Indoor Stadium. They have just two losses on the season, but saw Stanford and California (who they beat) move ahead of them into the top five, which is now Baylor, Notre Dame, UConn, Stanford, and Cal (ND and UConn play each other tonight).
Maryland also went 1-1 last week, but won on Sunday’s Senior Day. They dropped to number ten in the polls. Other ACC teams who are ranked include UNC (15) and somehow Florida State is still ranked (23) after going 0-2. Miami is on the cusp of being ranked.
Next up for the women is the ACC Tournament, which begins for them on Friday against the winner of NC State-Clemson (the first round game on Thursday). Last season, Duke became the first one seed to lose to an eight seed in the ACC Tournament. That eight seed is once again NC State.
