The Duke baseball team played their home opener on Friday afternoon in front of just 208 fans and shut out Bucknell, 9-0.
It was all about starter Trent Swart on Friday, as he took advantage of the cold (39 degrees) weather. He allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings. He tied a career-high with ten strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Swart retired 21 of 24, including the final 17 batters he faced. He threw 65 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
Duke took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning and took advantage of two Bucknell errors and two walks. They did not pick up a hit.
The Blue Devils busted out with a five run 6th inning and followed it up with a two run 7th inning. In the sixth, Anthony LaBruna cleared the bases with a one out double. Two batters later, Andrew Istler hit a homerun. Jeff Kremer followed with a double, and after a Bucknell pitching change, Mike Rosenfeld doubled in a run.
In the seventh, Matt Berezo drove in a run with a single and scored on a wild pitch.
On offense for Duke, Kremer and LaBruna each collected two hits. Andy Perez reached base three times, as he was hit once and walked twice.
The two teams meet again on Saturday at 1pm ET.
