Duke Men’s Soccer Looks to End Regular Season with a Win

The Duke men’s soccer team has just one regular season game left, on November 2nd at 7pm ET against SIU Edwardsville.

The Blue Devils have been playing well of late, with a victory and a tie over their last two games. That gives them a record of 7-7-2 overall.

On Saturday, they beat Virginia Tech, 2-0, in their final ACC game of the season. It was their seventh shutout of the season. Freshman Zach Mathers and sophomore Riley Wolfe recorded goals in the win.

They out-shot the Hokies, 14-7 and goalie James Belshaw picked up two saves. The Blue Devils finished ACC play at 3-4-1 and await ACC Tournament seeding.

Duke then ended their regular season road schedule at number 23 Elon on Tuesday night. The two teams played to a draw, 0-0 in double overtime. It was their third shutout in a row and have not allowed a goal since October 19th (a streak of 309:58 minutes).

The Blue Devils had eight shots to Elon’s seven, as Belshaw recorded three saves. However, there was just one goal combined for both teams in the game’s final twenty minutes.

The Duke women’s soccer team out-played 6th ranked Wake Forest in the ACC Quarterfinals, but allowed a goal 52 seconds into overtime to lose 1-0. It was the second straight season the Blue Devils were knocked out of the ACC Tournament by the Demon Deacons.

Laura Weinberg recorded four of the Blue Devils first eight shots (she had five total). It was her fourth straight match that she did not score (she leads the ACC in goals with 15). Wake did not attempt a shot until the 40th minute. They out-shot Wake, 13-6 overall.

The Blue Devils dropped to 12-5-2 on the season and await seeding for the NCAA Tournament during the soccer selection show on November 5th at 4:30pm ET.

Emmie Le Marchand and Paula Heimbach were named to the All-ACC Field Hockey Team. It is Le Marchand’s second selection to the team.

Meanwhile, the Duke field hockey team kicks off ACC Tournament play today at 3:30pm ET against number 7 Maryland. It will take place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Duke is the sixth seed, while the Terrapins are the third. The winner will take on second seed Virginia on Friday afternoon.

Last season, Duke lost to Maryland in the ACC semifinals, 3-2. The Terrapins beat the Blue Devils back on October 5th, 2-0 during the regular season.

The Blue Devils were 2-2 in their final games of the regular season, including wins over James Madison and California. They lost their season finale to UVA, 3-1.
