NC State gave Vanderbilt a little of what the Commodores did earlier in the regional, score runs late. The Wolfpack scored six runs over the final two innings to win 9-7 and celebrate winning the Raleigh Region. NC State was the final team to advance to the Super Regionals. They will play the number one team in the country, Florida.
It was the third time the two teams faced each other in the regional. Both teams scored a run in the first inning, with Vandy’s Mike Yastrzemski hitting a homerun. The Wolfpack scored two runs in the top of the 3rd inning via two fielding errors. The Commodores came right back with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning.
In the 9th inning, NC State scored three runs, but could have scored more. They had the bases loaded with just one out, but Vandy got back-to-back strikeouts. The inning was capped by Tarran Senay‘s two-run single. They were also helped out by another Vandy error.
Ryan Wilkins took the mound in the 9th inning for NC State and struck out the side to set off the celebration and win the region. Wilkins pitched 4.2 shutout innings and allowed just three hits.
NC State and Florida will begin their series in Gainesville on Saturday, June 9th at 2pm ET on ESPNU. Sunday’s game is set for 1pm ET on ESPNU, with Monday’s if necessary game set for 1pm ET on ESPN2.
*NC State joins Florida State as the only two ACC schools to move on to the Super Regionals. FSU will host Stanford in Tallahassee. Their series begins on Friday, June 8th. The first game is 7pm ET on ESPN2. Saturday’s game is 6pm ET on ESPN2 and the if necessary Sunday game is scheduled for 7pm ET on ESPN2.
