This past weekend was opening weekend across the country for college baseball. All 12 ACC teams were in action, all across the country. Duke traveled to 13th ranked Texas, Maryland traveled to 14th ranked UCLA, and Wake Forest traveled to New Mexico State. Virginia and Boston College played in the Caravelle Resort Tournament in South Carolina. Georgia Tech played in the Coca-Cola Classic and Virginia Tech played in the Kennesaw State Tournament.
Rain wreaked havoc across the college baseball schedule and many games were postponed, canceled, or moved up to an earlier day.
The big winner of the weekend was Maryland, who last season finished last in the ACC. The Terrapins traveled to UCLA and took two-out-of-three. All three games were close, but Maryland seemed to get the better pitching. Maryland won Friday night 2-1, but lost on Saturday 6-5. The Terrapins took the finale in eight innings (college baseball has a travel curfew), 5-1. I expect UCLA to drop in Baseball America’s latest top 25 poll.
The other big winner was Boston College, who went 3-0 at the Caravelle Resort Tournament. Last season, they had just 17 wins. BC beat Virginia on Friday and James Madison and Coastal Carolina on Saturday. Both UVA and Coastal Carolina were ranked in the top 35 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Poll.
Florida State and Miami were 3-0 at home this weekend as 20th ranked FSU swept Hofstra and 18th ranked Miami swept Rutgers.
The other ranked teams, Clemson, UNC, and GT struggled a bit. 16th ranked Clemson went 2-1 against UAB. 9th ranked UNC went 2-1 against Xavier. The Tarheels pitching staff gave up quite a few runs (22) though they scored 30 runs. 12th ranked GT went 3-1 in the Coca-Cola Classic. They lost the first game to Kent State before rebounding to win their next three.
Virginia Tech went 3-1 this weekend in the Kennesaw State Tournament. They lost their final game of the tourney to host Kennesaw State, as they made five errors. NC State went 2-1, but their final game of the weekend was rained out.
There were a few losers this weekend. Wake Forest went 1-3 at New Mexico State. UVA went 1-1-1 (yes they tied). They lost to BC, which already gives them a conference loss. They tied James Madison on Saturday night, as the game was called due to bad weather. They beat Coastal Carolina earlier in the day. Duke went 1-2 at Texas (though all three games were close).
In Baseball America’s latest poll, UNC dropped one spot from ninth to tenth. Georgia Tech moved up from 12th to 11th. Miami jumped from 18th to 14th. Clemson stayed in the 16th spot. FSU moved up two spots from 20th to 18th. Maryland beating up on UCLA caused the Bruins to drop from 14th to 22nd.
