Duke Holds on at Boston College with Clutch Late Play by Gray

After their huge win at home against ACC rival North Carolina on Monday night, the Duke women’s basketball team traveled to Massachusetts to face the worst team in the ACC, Boston College.

BC had yet to win an ACC game, but you wouldn’t know that by watching them play. They played hard, like most teams do against Duke, and wanted the win badly in front of a small crowd (they also have the worst attendance in the ACC).

Duke freshman Elizabeth Williams carried the Blue Devils in the first half. She had 14 points and five rebounds. BC was staying in the game with their three point shooting: 6-of-13 for 46%.

The game got really interesting late in the second half, cutting the lead to just one with 2:51 to go and Duke leading 61-60.

Then Chelsea Gray took over, like she usually does, late in the game. She hit two straight three pointers and made a great dish to Haley Peters for a two-point jumper. Gray also hit her two free throws to ice the game with just seven seconds to go. Duke held on for the 71-62 victory.

Gray finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting (3-of-4 from behind the arc). Williams finished with another double-double: she scored 18 points and hauled in ten rebounds. She missed a triple-double by just two: she had eight blocked shots. Peters also scored in double-figures with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting.

Duke lost the battle on the boards (24-23), but won the battle in the paint (32-24).

Next up for Duke is another road trip, this time to Florida State. The game will be played at 1pm ET on Sunday.

*In other ACC action, Maryland beat Clemson, 91-61 and Wake Forest beat FSU, 65-55. NC State won a non-conference game against Longwood, 74-45.
