Cubs Live Game Thread: DeReturn Of DeJesus

The Chicago Cubs will play the third of four games in their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight in Phoenix. While the Cubs try to secure at least a split of the series tonight, their lineup will be bolstered by the return of center fielder David DeJesus, who has been on the disabled list since June 15. With the return of DeJesus, we also get to see the departure of Dave Sappelt, who returns to Iowa. dejesus

Another development tonight is that Junior Lake is starting in left field in place of Alfonso “Definitely Not Being Traded Just A Scheduled Day Off” Soriano. The DeJesus/Lake tandem will be playing behind Jeff Samardzija tonight. The Shark pitched well his last time out, allowing one run in 7.1 innings in Colorado. I did the game thread that night, and guessed that he’d have a horrible game. So I’ll assume he’s going to be terrible tonight in hopes that he’ll pitch well.

The Diamondbacks counter with Ian Kennedy, who is 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA so far this season. One of those three wins was against the Cubs earlier this season, when he allowed four runs in seven innings. His career numbers against the Cubs are 3-2, 6.65 in 43.1 innings.

Lineup after the jump.

DeJesus CF
Lake LF
Rizzo 1B
Schierholtz RF
Castro SS
Valbuena 3B
Barney 2B
Castillo C
Samardzija P

Game time is 8:40 Central and will be broadcast on CSN+.

Soriano’s not going anywhere this season. Probably not next season, either. He’s had plenty of opportunities to go to contenders the past couple of seasons and nixed every one. He’s got security here, is comfortable and has no reason to leave. All that said, I’ve never wanted to be wrong about anything more.

And thanks, Mark, for making the comments time/datestamp font black. Much easier to read.

Um…he’s had one opportunity to go to a contender…and that was last year to the Giants.

He’ll be traded before the deadline.

    2. Sure thing. It was fine until we did this unread comments plugin.

Oh, he’s going all right. Book it.

Per ESPN,Spellcheck is being scouted tonight?

    1. He’s probably always being scouted…

  3. So… have they taken down Soriano’s photo yet?

You can’t like your own crappy comment, Jerk.

Two things are really honking me off tonight:

    1) Carrie Muskat tweeted “Soriano getting a scheduled day off, don’t go starting any rumors.” Um, when you decide the day before to give someone a day off BECAUSE OF ALL THE TRADE TALK, you can’t a) call it a scheduled day off; or b) tell people not to start rumors.

    2) I can’t believe Dale took Junior out of the lead-off spot. Who cares about DeJesus? Lake’s OBP is .565.

Two things are really honking me off tonight:

      1) Todd Ricketts telling Julie that Soriano is on the verge of being traded.

      2) People who think Junior Lake should only hit lead-off.

Soriano deal is done. The Cubs are just waiting for him to sign off on it, which he certainly will.

    1. Doc Blume says:

He’s been on the Cubs for 6 1/2 seasons.

Believe it or not, I’m going to miss him.

He always played with a smile on his face, no matter how bad he was playing.

      1. juliedicaro says:

I’m really going to miss him, too. He really grew on me the last few seasons. Even though I hate his contract, I really really like him.

        1. gravedigger says:

He grew on me too. Like a tumor.

  7. Doc Blume says:

Remember on LOHO day at Wrigley back in 2009 when Soriano threw a ball up into the bleachers for my daughter?

    1. juliedicaro says:

Yes! And my heart grew three sizes that day.

  8. Doc Blume says:

I’m heading to bed…so by the time I wake up in the morning, the Soriano deal will have fallen apart.
