If, like me, you had the good fortune to miss yesterday’s game, you missed yet another woeful day of the Cubs’ offense being shut out. You also missed another mental miscue by Starlin Castro, which led directly to a St. Louis run. That run didn’t make a difference in the game, and, according to the FOX announcers, Darwin Barney had also given up on the play. But that won’t silence the critics of Starlin, who, by all accounts, is having an awful season. He did take responsibility for his mistake.
“I knew the outs and everything, but I put my head down and made a mental mistake,” Castro said. “I don’t want to make any excuses for that. It’s my mistake, and that’s why I paid for that — that’s why I came out of the game. I feel really, really bad that it happened, especially with Woody pitching good.
“I have to pay for that. That’s a mistake that can’t happen in the game.”
Dale Sveum immediately pulled him from the game, but he’s back in today’s lineup. Today’s game is the rubber game of this three game series, and will feature Adam Wainwright (13-7, 2.71) and Edwin Jackson (7-12, 5.05). You might remember that the Cards had Wainwright miss a scheduled start against the Cubs last weekend so that he would face the Pirates instead. Wainwright is 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA against the Cubs this season, so let’s hope they still have his number.
