Tampa Bay Rays: Thanksmas Fundraiser Revisited

For those of you who follow me on Twitter (cough, @SarahSeesSports, cough), some of this may look familiar to you.

On Friday night, I attended Joe Maddon’s Thanksmas fundraiser at 717 South in Tampa.

There was a good size crowd and I imagine there was a good amount of money donated. Plus, the mixing of pro athletes with the common folk always leads to some fun people watching.

I’m in love with most ice sculptures and this one was no exception to that general rule. Plus, there was a gnome at the bottom of it.

Click through for some of the other photos I took without flash, so as not to be too obnoxious, along with my thoughts from the event.

The Thanksmas events in which Joe Maddon and company feed the homeless continues this week in the bay area and concludes on December 18th in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Reid Brignac, who is more attractive in person than he is in photos, was willing to sign memorabilia that fans brought with them. He was also a better bartender than at least one other member of the team, but I’ll get to that in a second.

See that smiling blur over there in the corner? That’s Matt Joyce. He did not even know what a whiskey sour was, let alone how to make one. Brignac was able to make one that was acceptable.

There’s David Price, with his eyes closed. Oh well. At least you can see his left arm. That’s what’s most important anyways.

I didn’t get to take a photo of Joe because he was too busy preparing food and mingling with those who had comes for dinner and not just for drinks. I also wasn’t able to get a picture of Sean Rodriguez or B.J. Upton. SRod was sweet and B.J. won some points following an interaction with a girl that went something like this:

Girl: So what’s your favorite drink?

Upton: Scotch.

Girl: I’ll have one of those on the rocks.

Upton: Do you like scotch?

Girl: Sure.

[Upton grabs the bottle of scotch and begins to pour it in a glass over ice. The girl tells him "more" and points to a spot on the glass. He looks at her as if to say, "Seriously?" then pours to where she marked. He walks away to put the scotch back on the top shelf and shakes his head. I was shaking my head, too.]

We know the night didn’t end too well for David Price, but Sarah and I enjoyed ourselves.

The Sarahs at Thanksmas

After Thanksmas began to wind down, my friend and I spent a few more hours in SoHo. Since we’re both named Sarah, just imagine how many people (read: men trying to hit on us) think we’re lying to them about our names when we go out together.

We spotted B.J. Upton and Reid Brignac while out and about and then bumped into some former Bachelorette contestants. I’m throwing that last part in here because the one wearing the Superman shirt (I won’t even try to explain how funny I think it is to see a reality TV personality wearing a Superman shirt) is Nick Peterson. He’s an alumni of the University of Tampa and former Spartans pitcher who was drafted by the Yankees in 2006.

My friend, Sarah, with Ames and Nick.

Please note, I knew none of this before Googling him today. I did, however, despite my better judgment, watch some of the last season of The Bachelorette.
