If you were one of the many people keeping your fingers crossed for a South Carolina-Clemson showdown in the Columbia Regional, you’re likely very, very happy right now.
As fate would have it, the Cocks and the Tigers will meet at 4 ET today on the diamond. Michael Roth will start on the mound for USC and Daniel Gossett will likely get the nod for CU. Roth has stymied the Tigers in previous meetings, something he can hopefully repeat this afternoon.
Both teams had offensive explosions yesterday, although Clemson also notched a grand slam courtesy of Phil Pohl. The Gamecocks were held hitless for five innings, but then made up for it by scoring seven runs in two innings. Today’s game likely won’t be very high-scoring, unless one team is simply on fire or has a complete breakdown.
USC is the better team, but that doesn’t guarantee a victory. They need to keep their offensive power going and also stay strong defensively. CU is obviously capable on both sides, so this game may come down to who makes a mistake first. These teams obviously met in the regular season, and Carolina beat the Tigers in Charleston and in Cola, but lost in Clemson.
If you’re lucky enough to be at the game today, I’m beyond jealous. Be loud and proud for the rest of us watching on television (ESPNU/ESPN3); show the country what Gamecock Nation is all about, and don’t be an idiot – especially if you’re on camera.
