Lady Gamecocks Back In The Top 25, Grant Honored

Markeshia Grant in action against Tennessee.

Following their huge victory over Tennessee and in the midst of their four-game wining streak, South Carolina’s women’s basketball team is back in the AP Top 25 this week, checking in at No. 24. The Gamecocks  (18-5, 7-3) were last ranked (also at No. 24) in January, when they were riding a fantastic eight-game winning streak.

The team is having their best season in years and barring a giant collapse, looks poised to reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in almost a decade, which also means for the first time since coach Dawn Staley has been at Carolina.

Standings-wise, the women are currently third overall in the conference and second in the SEC East. They;ve played six ranked teams so far this season, and have won four of those games.

Senior guard Marksehia Grant had a fantastic night against the Vols, setting a career high with 27 points. For that performance, she was chosen as the SEC Player of the Week. 21 of those points came from three-point shots, another career high. Staley had this to say about Grant’s honor:

“I’m so happy for Markeshia, who has been shooting the ball extremely. She ignited our offense and helped put us in a great position to beat Tennessee.”

Grant is the second Gamecock to be named SEC Player of the Week this season. La’Keisha Sutton, a fellow senior guard, received the honor in December.

The Lady Gamecocks’ next game is on Thursday at Arkansas, with tip off set for 8 ET. Their next home game is against Florida on Sunday, with tip off scheduled for 5 ET.
