Girl Power: Gamecocks To Fete Females In Sports

Coach Staley and her team will try for their seventh SEC victory on Sunday.

This Sunday, the South Carolina women’s hoops team will welcome Auburn to town. That’s not all that will be happening at the Colonial Life Arena, though, as celebrations for National Girls and Women in Sports Day are also planned.

From Gamecocks Online:

Beginning at 1:30 p.m., the concourse will be lined with booths of various University of South Carolina clubs, organizations and varsity women’s teams.

Attendees include University First Lady Mrs. Patricia Pastides, the volleyball, softball, track and field and diving teams, Academy Sports, the Gamecock Club and Girls on the Run. Visitors to each booth will be able to participate in a type of physical activity or walk away with information about a healthy lifestyle.

In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Title IX legislation, fans will also receive commemorative posters about the legislation that opened opportunities for girls and women in sports across the country. The Gamecocks also will honor the participants and winners of the second segment of the Read with the Gamecocks program at halftime.

This all sounds really cool, and I like the tie-in with the 40th anniversary of Title IX. In case you needed any more persuasion to head to the CLA on Sunday, the ladies team is also ranked in the top 15, and they’re looking for their fifth straight win. Tip off is set for 3 p.m., and doors will open at 1:30. Bonus for kids 17 and under: you get in free!
