The Chicago Cubs and we the fans are riding high after last night’s long-delayed sweep of the White Sox. After that win, the Cubs are now 12-6 against the American League. Take that, Junior Circuit! Despite their success against the AL, all bets are off tonight, as notorious trader and Cub-killer Albert Pujols returns to Wrigley Field with the Angels. You might remember that the Cubs split two games with the Angels in Anaheim in June, with Mr. Pujols hitting the game-winning home run in the first game.
Pitching tonight for the Angels is Joe Blanton. Blanton has a 4.63 K :BB ratio on the year, but is just 2-10 with a 5.14 ERA. He’s allowed 17 home runs in 18 starts, so it could be a nice fireworks show depending on the conditions at the park tonight.
Taking the mound for the Cubs after Julie is NL All Star Travis Wood. Travis is 5-6 with a 2.69 ERA and 16 quality starts in 17 tries so far this season. After first saying Wood wouldn’t be available to pitch in the All Star Game, the Cubs are now saying that he will be available (rules stipulate a one inning maximum). It’s good news for Travis, and hopefully he’ll get the chance to make us all proud.
Lineup after the jump.
Game time is 7:05 Central, and you’ll be able to watch or not watch on CSN.
*An earlier version of this story indicated that Julie would be throwing the opening pitch tonight. Apparently I mix up days that start with “T” and it’s Thursday. My apologies.
