Chicago Cubs Game Thread: Angels In The Outfield

The Chicago Cubs and we the fans are riding high after last night’s long-delayed sweep of the White Sox. After that win, the Cubs are now 12-6 against the American League. Take that, Junior Circuit! Despite their success against the AL, all bets are off tonight, as notorious trader and Cub-killer Albert Pujols returns to Wrigley Field with the Angels. You might remember that the Cubs split two games with the Angels in Anaheim in June, with Mr. Pujols hitting the game-winning home run in the first game. angels

Pitching tonight for the Angels is Joe Blanton. Blanton has a 4.63 K :BB ratio on the year, but is just 2-10 with a 5.14 ERA. He’s allowed 17 home runs in 18 starts, so it could be a nice fireworks show depending on the conditions at the park tonight.

Taking the mound for the Cubs after Julie is NL All Star Travis Wood. Travis is 5-6 with a 2.69 ERA and 16 quality starts in 17 tries so far this season. After first saying Wood wouldn’t be available to pitch in the All Star Game, the Cubs are now saying that he will be available (rules stipulate a one inning maximum). It’s good news for Travis, and hopefully he’ll get the chance to make us all proud.

Lineup after the jump.

Borbon CF
Castro SS
Rizzo 1B
Soriano LF
Valbuena 3B
Navarro C
Schierholtz RF
Barney 2B
T.Wood P

Game time is 7:05 Central, and you’ll be able to watch or not watch on CSN.

*An earlier version of this story indicated that Julie would be throwing the opening pitch tonight. Apparently I mix up days that start with “T” and it’s Thursday. My apologies.

    1. Doc Blume says:

The Cubs should probably have her pitch both days.

Finally made it out of the DMV?

      1. johnnywest333 says:

Still at the DMV, were having a sleepover…

  8. cubsluver22 says:

The other Wood is looking dominant. Julie should start a LOHO campaign on twitter to get Wood as the starter in the All Star game based on leading the majors in QS and one if the lowest ERA’s.

    1. sloanpeterson2 says:

But he’s not shiny and new like dome other pitchers…

  9. sloanpeterson2 says:

Good news – I get to see the game. Bad news-the announcers are the Angel announcers Gubiza and rojas….

  10. cubsluver22 says:

    Castro HR

  11. johnnywest333 says:

    2. Doc Blume says:

I’ve heard of sites like that…

But seriously, I miss the video chats we used to do on this site.

When Darwin Barney is hitting shots, you know your team is in the groove.

  16. cubsluver22 says:

    Omg Soriano 2nd HR

  17. johnnywest333 says:

So when does the Cubs game come on?

    1. Doc Blume says:

      Sometime tomorrow.

  18. Doc Blume says:

I swear to God, Albert Pujols could be 150 years old and on a respirator and he could still hit a homer against the Cubs.

  19. sloanpeterson2 says:

Who’ s pitching for the Cubs?

    1. Doc Blume says:

      Not Julie…not tonight.

  20. cubsluver22 says:

Were gonna be like the White Sux and start popping fireworks after every HR now.

    1. Doc Blume says:

Well…not quite…but the Cubs would like to have the option available to them.

Honestly, that’s a bit much. Many of the Cubs requests are starting to get to the point of a “Seriously?” comment from just about everyone.

I’m waiting for them to request putting up a groofy twirling cubbie bear structure that lights up after each Cubs homer out in right field, blocking even more rooftop views.

      1. Doc Blume says:

Oh…back to the point though…I’ve been pretty anti-neighborhood with this whole renovation plan thing, but I think if the Cubs were to start firing off fireworks, they have a legitimate gripe for once. You can’t tell me that fireworks are going to help the revenue streams for this team or help its performance on the field.

      2. sloanpeterson2 says:

I want to see a drawing of how that might look. Or, better yet, when a Cub hits a home run, an animated Cub breaks into a chorus of “Go Cubs Go.”
