Caribbean Series is set

The Caribbean Series is all set, as Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League (the team that lefty Ryan Verdugo was pitching for this winter) was the final team to clinch a spot. They will open the series on Saturday night against Villa Clara (Cuba) at Margarita Island in Venezuela. It will be a round-robin format.

On Tuesday night, both Licey (Dominican Republic) and Magallanes (Venezuela) clinched berths.

Licey clinched the Dominican Series title with a 3-2 win in Game 8 over Escogido. KC Royals utility man Emilio Bonifacio broke the 2-2 tie with a two out, RBI single in the seventh.

Francisley Bueno got the start for Licey and allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out six and induced eight ground outs in picking up the no decision. One of the newest Royals, reliever Guillermo Mota, pitched 1/3 of an inning for Licey in the series clinching win. He allowed a hit.

In the loss for Escogido, Pedo Ciriaco played shortstop and batted third. He went 2-for-5. Melky Mesa was the DH and batted sixth. He went 1-for-3 with a strikeout and was pinch-hit for in the eighth.


To the Venezuelan Winter League, where Magallanes won their series over Caribes in five games. They won the clincher, 11-6 as they scored six runs in the 8th inning.

Ramon Hernandez was the DH for Magallanes in the clincher and was the offensive hero. He went 4-for-5 with six RBIs. He hit a solo home run and added a two out, three-run shot in the eighth.

In the loss for Caribes, centerfielder Gorkys Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a run scored.


*Mayaguez won the Puerto Rican League title.
