1897 – The school has had a lot of different names in their existence. It has been known as San Diego Normal School, San Diego Teachers College, San Diego State College, and California State University, San Diego.
Number of students:
Aztecs. Their mascot is Monty Montezuma.
Fun fact about their mascot:
SDSU used to have a cute and cuddly looking secondary mascot named Zuma. He was a jaguar. Kids loved Zuma, but many fans hated him as he wasn’t a REAL Aztec and didn’t fit the Aztec mold. Zuma got the boot as Monty’s sidekick.
Things to do in San Diego:
Stone Brewing Company. Seriously, go there for me. This is an amazing brewery.
The San Diego Zoo – Top notch zoo. If you’re from Columbus, you can go there and debate how the C-Bus zoo is actually a better product.
Sea World – If you’re longing for the days when there was a Sea World in Aurora, OH.
USS Midway Museum
Really…there is a lot I could put in this section.
Notable SDSU Alumni:
Gregory Peck – Actor
Julie Kavner -Voice of Marge Simpson
Marion Ross – Mrs. Cunningham from Happy Days
Record Vs. OSU:
7 offensive, 9 defensive
Last week was fun, right? I mean, that first quarter. After that, a lot of the holes we’d likely expected to see on defense reared their ugly heads and the offense started kind of messing around and not really doing their jobs. All of that leads to the fear that OSU may soil themselves in The Shoe against SDSU.
I’m here to say that it won’t happen.
Roby is back and should erase the nightmare that was Armani Reeves in coverage and Shazier should have learned some valuable lessons in hydration to avoid cramping. Assuming the two deeps hold, CJ Barnett should also return. This will lead to a much improved OSU defense. I promise.
Having said that, SDSU has a way of making things interesting when they play The Buckeyes. The Aztecs didn’t exactly get off to the best of starts and were handed a loss at the hands of Eastern Illinois. Not just a loss, mind you, but a 40-19 shellacking at the hands of an FCS opponent. That doesn’t bode well for SDSU. Of course, they are also likely looking to prove a few points.
I don’t think OSU beats the spread on this one, but I think it will be another win. Maybe I am a bit more shaken by the defensive gaps than I am willing to admit. I think OSU scores points in bunches, but I think SDSU does better than expected. And, yes, if it is closer than the EIU contest, I will officially be nervous beyond comprehension for week 3.
