O Captain! My Captain!

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Michael Young has agreed to go to the Philadelphia Phillies, who will start the 36-year-old at third base.  Texas will apparently send Philadelphia $10 million toward Young’s $16 million salary for 2013.

Young will reportedly get $1.2 million in benefits as part of the deal (in part, to account for the tax consequence now that he’ll be subject to state income tax), and also get a full no-trade clause (which he’d lose otherwise in the deal, as the “5” part of the 10/5 rule that entitled him to his present no-trade rights vanish with the change in teams).

Young, according to Nightengale, told the Phillies he did not want a contract extension, a signal that he wants to choose his own destination in 2014.

The Rangers have not confirmed the trade, but Nightengale expects a formal announcement from both clubs this afternoon.

The Rangers will receive 25-year-old RHP Josh Lindblom and a minor leaguer, believed to be 22-year-old RHP Lisalverto Bonilla. Lindblom would definitely go into the Rangers’ bullpen as a sixth-inning or later option. Bonilla, who had 64 strikeouts in 46.1 innings split between Class A and Double-A in 2012, would likely not be an option for the major league club at the start of the season.

Michael Young, was the the guiding force in the Rangers clubhouse and on the field for the last decade as the team stormed to prominence. Although in the twilight of his career, he was a part of the two greatest seasons in franchise history in 2011-12.

“Mike’s the glue that holds everybody together,” OF David Murphy said Friday on XM Radio of the possibility of losing Young. “He’s a great player regardless of what type of year that he had last year. I think every player is allowed an off year here or there regardless of whether you are a superstar or whether you’re an average player.

“Mike’s definitely been in that superstar/All-Star status for a long time and didn’t live up to his own standards last year. But he’s just a guy that he creates a great atmosphere in our clubhouse regardless of whether you are a rookie, whether you’ve been around a long time, whether you’re a player that has just signed as a free agent or traded for. Everybody feels welcome in our clubhouse and everybody gets along.”

Via twitter, Jason Parks [Baseball Prospectus] says, “If you can play 12 full-seasons at the ML level with one team, I find it very hard to question your #want. Tip of the cap, Mr. Young.
Via twitter, Elvis Andrus: Super sad that our captain Michael Young is gone wish the best for him and his family. Be always the best.

Last season there was a lot of fans complaining about his play in the field and his production at the plate. And yes those things were true. Michael Young had the 2nd-lowest bWAR in MLB last season. He was valued at 2.4 Wins BELOW Replacement in 2012. But part of the blame falls at the feet of the manager who refused to bench a slumping player at any point during the year and continued to play him in the field and give him at-bats. Over the past couple of seasons fans have soured on Young, with his refusing to move positions and then deciding to after pitching a fit like my infant son does, and then refusing a trade. But this time he figured it was best to part with a franchise he had only played with at the ML level after getting traded from the Blue Jays.

Refer back to what Jason Parks said and as a fan of this team let’s remember all the wonder things he’s done for it and us. The community will miss him as well as he donated a lot of time and money to charities with the Michael Young foundation. So let me just say thanks for everything you’ve meant to this team, this city, and the fans.

Michael Young’s tenure here lasted from 7/19/2000 to 12/8/2012. That’s 12 years, 4 months, 20 days. Over 4,200 days. He leaves here as leader in games played and the all-time hits leader. If there’s anything I regret with this, it’s that the Rangers never managed to win the big one with him here.

I think I’ll wear my Young t-shirt I bought 12 years ago when he was a rookie one last time.

Rangers News And Minor Chords

- According to three major league sources, the Rangers are in advanced talks with Philadelphia about a deal for the 36-year-old Young that would include the Rangers eating more than half of his remaining $16 million in salary. The Rangers would likely receive a young major league reliever along with a lower-level prospect.

- Texas Rangers are interested in hanging on to Josh Hamilton and remain the most serious Mariners competitor on that front. But the Rangers also remain engaged in a two-pronged battle with the Dodgers for the services of starting pitcher Zack Greinke and would possibly not be able to land both him and Hamilton. I think the Rangers would rather have Greinke / Upton.

- Athletics take 3B Thomas Mendonca from Rangers in minor league Rule 5 draft. Former Fresno State player.

- Indians with the 5th pick selected 1B Chris McGuinness in the Rule 5 draft as well. He was the Arizona Fall League player of the year.

- According to Bob Nightengale (USA Today), Texas is willing to go to four years on Hamilton, but won’t go five.

 - Jim Bowden (ESPN/XM) tweets that Texas remains Hamilton’s first choice, with Seattle as his fallback.

- If the Mariners signed him they would forfeit the 12th overall pick in June’s draft if they sign Hamilton, but Texas wouldn’t get the pick.  The Rangers would end up with a supplemental first-rounder under the new CBA, while Seattle’s pick would simply disappear.

- There are rampant reports that Seattle was getting involved in the multi-team trade discussions centered on Arizona outfielder Justin Upton, Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, and young Texas players such as Mike Olt and Martin Perez, and Bowden speculates that the Mariners are doing so with one primary objective: To help ensure that Upton lands in Texas, opening things up for Seattle to sign Hamilton. Weird.

- According to Jeff Wilson (Fort Worth Star-Telegram), the Rangers are willing to move Olt and Perez if it brings Upton to Texas.  Wilson adds that the Diamondbacks, who signed third baseman Eric Chavez yesterday, could flip Olt to the Indians to sweeten the package for Cabrera, and that an Indians reliever could move to Texas.

- Richard Durrett (ESPN Dallas) reports that Texas has talked to Yoshinori Tateyama about coming back.

- Ken Rosenthal suggests Texas, Seattle, and Philadelphia have expressed interest in Raul Ibanez.

- A Major League source tells Wilson that Texas isn’t currently discussing Shields with the Rays, as the club remains focused on Greinke.  Wilson adds that Anibal Sanchez is a potential Rangers target if Greinke signs with the Dodgers.

- Jim Bowden believes Texas has “enough Mike Olt, Leury Garcia, Robbie Ross, Cody Buckel types to get James Shields comfortably.”  He predicts the Rangers end up with either Hamilton or Upton, and then Greinke or Shields.

- According to T.R. Sullivan , the Rangers have traded pitcher Wilfedo Boscan to the Padres. He is the Player to Be Named Later in the trade that sent reliever Corey Burns to the Rangers. The deal was completed after the Rule 5 draft.

- They have agreed to terms with the following four players to minor league contracts with invitations to major league spring training: 1B/DH Brandon Allen, RHP Jake Brigham, RHP Evan Meek, and RHP Randy Wells.

- Koji Uehara signs a one year deal with the Red Sox. I wanted to see him back here. Oh well.

GASSED And Look For A Very Busy Rangers Offseason

(Image via flickr.com user Rich Anderson.)

My fire Ron Washington website was going to be up soon but with the Indians hiring Terry Francona over the weekend, it looks like that’s going to have to wait a little while.

But regardless many changes are going to be blowing in the Rangers camp this offseason between free agents, trades, released and maybe possible coaching and manager changes. Many players and coaches you may have seen the last of in a Rangers uniform.

“NO SERIOUSLY, RON WASHINGTON WOULD LIKE HIS PANTS BACK, YOU GUYS.” – Jay Jaffe [Sports Illustrated] via Twitter

This has been a terrific run from 2009-2012 for this group. The last four years have been fantastic for Rangers fans. Did fatigue play a part? Did Washington play his regulars too much? Did the front office not give the coaching staff a good enough bench to give the regulars time off? A quick look at what I think fatigue played a huge role:

Let’s look at the core players for example. Here are their games played in 2012 and the games they didn’t play in the final months of the season. Players will tell you they get off days [but only four the last ten weeks] on the schedule and they want to be out there every day and they played in two straight full Octobers. Here’s a look:

Texas Rangers: Let’s Beat A Dead Horse!

I miss the happy Texas Rangers.

Today, I was supposed to be getting ready to go to a game at RBiA to see the Rangers play. Instead I’m sitting at work and trying to figure out what I’m going to have for dinner tonight.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

Over the next few months, I expect to see a lot of changes in the makeup of the Texas Rangers. A few of the key players for this team over the past few years are free agents (i.e. Josh Hamilton and Mike Napoli, among others). Along with the possibility of not resigning at least one of those two, I expect a few trades. I think they need some new blood in the clubhouse that isn’t bitter or beaten down about the past couple of postseasons.

This team needs to start over.

Rangers Recap: Happy Dance After Win Over Halos

Let’s get this straight…I really hate West Coast games. It’s almost impossible for me to stay up late, watch the game, and be functional at work in the mornings. Even though the Rangers and Angels have always had a good rivalry and today was a huge game with Holland and CJ Wilson on the mound, the Angels just didn’t seem like they could get people in the seats.

I’m pretty sure there should be a rule. If you don’t have a certain number of fans at a game the other team can push the game up to accommodate their fans. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Anyways…the game. I’ve been doing a happy dance over that game last night. Why? Holland took on CJ Wilson. That was fun to watch. Holland looked great last night. It looks like he’s settling in to his post season awesomeness. He pitched 7, gave up 2 runs and 6 hits.

CJ on the other hand only went 2 and 2/3 innings. Excuse me….BWAHAHAHA. Sorry, I’m done. The Rangers loaded the bases in the first but couldn’t get anything out of it…You could tell though it was only a matter of time before they started to hit the ball.

In the top of the 3rd Elvis started us off with a triple and then after Young and Napoli doubles the Rangers were on the board 3-0. Bye, Bye CJ!!!

The Rangers added a couple more in the 8th off a Nelly double and a Geovany Soto bomb to make the score 6-2…That’s how you do it boys. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Pretty simple right?

FINAL: Rangers 6, Angels 2

END OF GAME NOTES:

  • Hamilton was still out with the snot rocket problem…Young did a good job of filling the 3 hole though. 5 AB, 2 runs, 2 hits, and 1 RBI…Not bad Mikey, not bad.
  • Can I tell you how happy I am Holland beat CJ? Happy dances all around!
  • Oakland lost again to the Tigers last night! Whoohoo!

Texas Rangers: 3 Million And Counting…

(Image via Keith Allison.)

For the first time in franchise history, the Texas Rangers have hit the 3 million in attendance mark.  I guess back-to-back World Series appearances and the unusually mild Texas summer help things, huh?  It’s too bad the Rangers couldn’t get a win.

We didn’t get the Derek Holland we had last game, but this one was OK too.  I’ll take a 7 inning, 7 strike outs, 2 run outing.  And sadly, like his last outing, Holland didn’t get a win.

The offense tonight was fueled by Beltre/Cruz/Young who were responsible for the 2 runs scored in the 4th and for the 2 runs that put the Rangers on top in the 8th, but 4 runs just weren’t enough.

Joe Nathan was brought in to finish things off in the 9th, his 3rd straight appearance in as many games.  A home run to the first batter he faced didn’t start things off well.  A single followed by ANOTHER home run and the Rangers were down 5-4.  Elvis Andrus did his best to muster up a rally by tripling with 2 outs in the bottom 9th, but David Murphy failed to get him home.  This was Nathan’s first blown save since April 11th…hard to be too upset about that.

FINAL: Rangers 4, Indians 5

Injury Updates: Josh Hamilton, who received a shot in his knee earlier today, was held out of the lineup as a precaution.  Adrian Beltre, who injured his shoulder in last night’s game, was restricted to DH duties.  The Rangers aren’t acting like either injuries are overly serious, but you never know.  Mike Olt, who left the game last night, has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and will probably be out 10-14 days.

Texas Rangers: Ron Washington Is Just Trying To Piss Me Off

(Image via Keith Allison.)

On a night when both the A’s and Angels were off, the Rangers had an opportunity to gain a little more ground in the AL West.  With the game tied 4-4 headed into the top of the 10th, Ian Kinsler led off the inning with a (nail biting) triple.  Then who else but Michael Young (trollin’ trollin’) would come through with a game winning single to put the Rangers up 5-4?  Joe Nathan came in to finish things off in the bottom of the 1oth.

Scott Feldman, tonight’s starter, had yet another shockingly decent outing, allowing only 3 runs on 6 hits over 6 1/3 innings.  Unfortunately, despite a solid start, Feldman was not eligible for the win after Michael Kirkman gave up the Rangers 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 7th.

Offensively, the Rangers made quite a bit of noise in the 4th on home runs by Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre (I know, you’re shocked).  They tacked on a 4th run in the 7th on a double by Geovany Soto.  But that was it until the 10th.

Since it wouldn’t be a Laura recap without a little “let’s question a Ron Washington bonehead decision” rant… Top of the 9th, tie ball game, 2 outs, man on 1st.  Wash (WITH AN EXTENDED BENCH THAT INCLUDES ANDRUS AND PROFAR) lets Gentry bat against a RHP.  Sigh.  It’s like he’s decided to do the opposite of what is logical nowadays.  Of course Gentry struck out.  Probably doesn’t help that Gentry never plays either…

FINAL: Rangers 5, Royals 4

Texas Rangers: Wait, Did The Cowboys Play Tonight?

Michael, you’re just trollin’ us now… (Image via Keith Allison.)

In a game that I’m sure very few in the Dallas metroplex even paid attention to (thanks, Cowboys), the Rangers were able to pad their lead in the AL West, going up 5 games on the A’s.

The big story (again) was Adrian Beltre.  With a 3-run home run and a triple to go along with a couple of nifty plays at 3rd, Beltre continued on his recent tear.  Oh, and that’s 10 home runs in his last 14 games. No big deal.

The game overall wasn’t overly exciting.  The Rangers went up 3-0 in the 1st and just sort of held on for the remainder of the game, just keeping it close enough that you reconsidered changing the channels (you know, for those of us who probably weren’t going to watch the Cowboys in the first place).

Aside from Beltre, Young also hit a home run of his own, his 6th of the year.  We can argue all day why the hell he’s playing 2nd when you have a perfectly good middle infielder sitting the bench, but that would be a waste of time because we all know how Wash feels about rookies taking veterans spots…

Ryan Dempster, tonight’s starter, was pretty solid, keeping the Royals to only 2 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings.  The bullpen?  Sigh. Let’s just say they have to get their sh*t together before October.  Ogando allowed 2 runs in 1 inning.  Adams allowed 1 run in 1 inning.  Nathan allowed 1 run in 1 inning.  Guys, that won’t cut it.

FINAL: Rangers 7, Royals 6

Rangers Recap: HomeRun Happy Rangers!

Happy Labor Day everybody! I love today. Celebrating working by not going to work. Awesome. I hope everyone had a great weekend at BBQs, pools, parties, games, etc!!!

The Rangers came to play today when Yu Darvish took the mound against Chen and the Kansas City Royals. Darvish looked awesome today. He pitched 7 innings, gave up 3 hits and 3 runs and struckout 6, but the coolest part was he had a perfecto game going into the 6th inning. He got the first 17 he faced out and was only broken up by a two out walk and a bloop single in the 6th.

Darvish was on today. He looked like he was more relaxed, throwing pitches he knew he was comfortable with, and cut down on his walks. It’s amazing what happens when you don’t give up 6 walks a game.

The Rangers had Darvish’s back and put up 8 runs with 5 bombs by Beltre, Cruz, Hamilton, Young and Soto. Home run happy team!!! That makes me happy.

In the top of the 9th inning it almost got a little dramatic when Royals pitcher, Louis Coleman, plunked Nelson Cruz in the back. He was obviously trying to send some kind of message, I’m just ot sure what that message was supposed to be.

Anyways, Nelly looked like he was ready to charge the mound when both benches were cleared and warned. The drama fizzled out when Michael Young hammered one to left center. That shut everyone up. It was great. The Royals couldn’t catch up to Joe Nathan however and the game would end with the Rangers on top by 4.

Have a great rest of the long weekend everyone!!!

FINAL: Rangers 8, Royals 4

END OF GAME NOTES

  • I kind of missed Profar being in the lineup today. Kinsler went 0-5 and was less than impressive. Don’t get me wrong I love me some Kinsler, but with Profar at second that is one killer infield.
  • Beltre is still eating his super Wheaties.
  • Hamilton is either on fire or cold as ice. He’s either bombing home runs or striking out. There is no in between and it’s starting to get on my nerves. Let’s get some consistency in here people!
  • David Murphy is still my hero. Dude is a stud.
  • Matt Harrison hits the mound tomorrow to go for his 16th win.

Rangers 6-Run 8th Seals Twins’ Fate, Bottle Of Red Wine Seals Mine

The Starter And Game

Roy Oswalt made a spot start, with the team pushing Yu Darvish back until Tuesday because of a tight quad. He went 5 1/3 giving up four runs, but only three were earned. He walked one and struck out four. He botched a rundown in the third inning as a runner from third was allowed to score and tie the game at two. Body language is easy to read but hard to know what’s really going on, but  again it looked like Oswalt was not happy being lifted in the sixth inning.
