Futility Exercise: Mid Season Awards

It’s been another mesmerizing baseball season so far with no-hitters, perfect games and Aaron Hill hitting for the cycle twice within a few days of each other.

And the Rangers still having the best run differential in all of baseball despite losing by scores of 21-8 and 19-2 over the 1st half.

It’s time for my Midseason Awards…

NL MVP OF THE HALF-YEAR

Andrew McCutchen, Pirates

Center Fielder, Pittsburgh Pirates

2012 STATS

  • GM78
  • HR16
  • RBI54
  • R53
  • OBP.410
  • AVG.356

I can’t believe I’m not casting this vote for Joey Votto, but Andrew McCutchen is putting up these numbers with Larry, Moe and Curly in the line up with him.

Apologies to: Joey Votto, David Wright, Ryan Braun, Carlos Beltran.

AL MVP OF THE HALF-YEAR

Josh Hamilton, Rangers

Outfielder, Texas Rangers

2012 Stats

  • GM79
  • HR27
  • RBI75
  • R54
  • OBP.380
  • AVG.308

I could have just as well have put Mike Trout here, but I’m tried of people talking about Mike Trout.

Josh Hamilton leads the league in slugging, OPS, runs created and offensive winning percentage, not to mention your old-fashioned departments like home run ratio and RBIs.

Apologies to: Mike Trout, Robinson Cano, Paul Konerko.

NL CY YOUNG OF THE HALF-YEAR

R.A. Dickey, Mets

Pitcher, New York Mets

2012 STATs

  • GM17
  • W12
  • L1
  • BB26
  • K123
  • ERA2.40

We’ve got knuckleballers in the Hall of Fame (Ted Lyons, Phil Niekro, Hoyt Wilhelm). We’ve had a knuckleballer start an All-Star Game (Dutch Leonard, 1943). But never a knuckleballer who won a Cy Young Award. He leads the league in WHIP, wins above replacement, wins, complete games, double-figure strikeout games.

Apologies to: Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Vogelsong, James McDonald, Johnny Cueto.

AL CY YOUNG OF THE HALF-YEAR

Justin Verlander

Pitcher, Detroit Tigers

2012 STATS

  • GM18
  • W9
  • L5
  • BB30
  • K128
  • ERA2.58

Verlander leads the major leagues in starts, who has done that more times (nine) than Weaver and Sale combined (eight). Two words: Innings eater.

Apologies to: Chris Sale, Jerod Weaver

NL ROOKIE OF THE HALF-YEAR

Bryce Harper, Nationals

Outfielder, Washington Nationals

2012 STATS

  • GM60
  • HR8
  • RBI25
  • R42
  • OBP.355
  • AVG.283

This was a clown question, bro.

Apologies to: Wade Miley, Wilin Rosario, Todd Frazier, Zack Cozart.

AL ROOKIE OF THE HALF-YEAR

Mike Trout, Angels

Outfielder, Los Angeles Angels

  • GM64
  • HR12
  • RBI40
  • R57
  • OBP.397
  • AVG.341
  • SB26

He’s darn near the MVP, so of course he wins this hands down.

Apologies to: Yu Darvish, Jarrod Parker, Will Middlebrooks.

Yeah, I’d have to agree with you on all of these at this point. It’s certainly been an interesting first half for sure!
