The Zags kicked of WCC play with a huge 90-51 victory over Portland in the Kennel Wednesday. The big win was the first of the season that was really maintained throughout the game.
Kevin Pangos continued his successful scoring from behind the arc as he went five for seven. He ended the night with 19 points.
Several Zags scored in the double figures, with Sam Dower tossing in 15, Rob Sacre contributing 13, and Ryan Spangler adding 11. Almost the entire roster received double digit minutes of playing time, and no one had more than 22 minutes on the court.
The balance and dominance that the Bulldogs demonstrated in Wednesday’s victory over the Pilots was not only an impressive beginning to the West Coast Conference portion of the season, but also a convincing win that the Zags needed on the schedule.
As GU heads to Cincinnati to face Xavier on New Year’s Eve, the W over Portland will hopefully provide a solid dose of momentum to fight the fellow Jesuit mid-major national power. Both teams have fallen from the rankings after starting as top 25 teams, but are clawing their way back toward the standings.
