Today the Colorado Avalanche (finally) announced their intention to retire Adam Foote’s number 52. The team said that the date will be determined over the summer (remember, next year’s NHL schedule hasn’t been released yet). I imagine that the team would like to retire the number during the home opener, which is what they did for Peter Forsberg almost two years ago.

Adam Foote played over 1,000 games in 19 NHL seasons. 17 of those seasons were spent with the Colorado Avalanche (there was a brief stint in Columbus). He served as the Avs second ever captain. His 259 points with the Avs/Nordiques (he earned 308 total) rank second in franchise history, and his 1,534 total penalty minutes were legendary.

I was there for Adam Foote’s final game, when he skated on a broken shin in order to say goodbye to the Avs fans. Foote is one of the players I grew up idolizing, and I’m so proud that he represented the Avalanche organization for so many years. It’ll be good to see #52 in the rafters.
